Darius Garland says a fresh start with the Los Angeles Clippers helped him rediscover his enjoyment of the game after being traded from Cleveland midway through the season.

Appearing on the Ball In The Family podcast, the player explained that Los Angeles has given him more freedom as a primary ball-handler and playmaker, allowing him to take on a larger leadership role on the court.

“It’s been great, bro,” Garland said. “Coming to a system where I can actually be me. Have the ball in my hand for the majority of the game and actually have control of the pace of the game.”

The veteran guard added that he has enjoyed being trusted to direct the offense and make decisions throughout games.

“Just being like a second coach out there, literally. It was fun when I was out there playing, for sure. I got my joy back.”

Garland’s departure ended a backcourt partnership with Donovan Mitchell that never fully produced the results Cleveland envisioned.

Injuries also played a role during his time with the Cavaliers before the franchise dealt him to the Clippers in exchange for James Harden ahead of the trade deadline.
