The Los Angeles Sparks improved its season record to 7-6 with a 111-102 overtime victory against the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday night. Sparks superstar Kelsey Plum scored a career-high 43 points to tie the franchise’s single-game scoring record.
Plum wasn’t the only player putting up big numbers on Saturday, as Mercury guard Kahleah Copper scored 41 points. Plum and Copper’s 40-point games marked the first time two opponents have scored 40+ points in the same game in WNBA history.

“That was an offensive display by both Kah and KP,” Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said, per ESPN. “When they both have it going like that, it’s impressive and fun to watch.”

Plum’s 43 points came from making 14 of 26 shots from the field, 5 of 11 from beyond the arc and 10 of 12 at the free throw line. She also scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to tie the Sparks’ record for points in the fourth quarter.
“In the offseason this year, I really took my weight room strength and conditioning to another level,” said Plum, per ESPN. “Another thing is just mentally I’ve grown and been a lot more patient. I appreciate that Coach gives me the freedom to really go out there and just play.”

Plum Sent the Game to Overtime
Plum’s final basket of the fourth quarter was a layup that tied the game with a second remaining. She sent the game to overtime, where Los Angeles outscored Phoenix 13-4 to win the game.
The win makes the Sparks’ record 3-2 in Commissioner’s Cup play.
Plum signed a discounted one-year, $999,999 deal with the Sparks in free agency this offseason. She turned down a $1.4 million supermax contract but accepted the smaller contract to give the Sparks more financial flexibility to build a championship contending team.
