Shane van Gisbergen is back in victory lane. On Sunday, van Gisbergen and the No. 97 team for Trackhouse Racing won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway. The driver of the No. 97 car was forced to hold off a hard-charging Chase Briscoe, who had the better vehicle at the end of the race.
Following the event, van Gisbergen discussed his big win at Sonoma. After being wrecked out in San Diego, this was a special win for the No. 97 team.

“Yeah, what a day,” van Gisbergen said. “We were really bad yesterday, and these guys did an amazing job turning this car into a winner. The No. 19 was coming. [Chase Briscoe] was really, really good, and I ran out at the end. But thank you to Red Bull, Trackhouse, Chevy. Pretty special to make up for last week, too. I was back to normal by the weekend, but yeah, I was certainly pissed at the start of the week. This really makes up for it sharing it with these guys. They went through it at the start of the week. Pretty special to win.”
“We had these sh– boxes come out in front and they were wobbling all over the track and putting dust and I just kept struggling. Chase was just really, really good. Yeah, a couple more laps we would have had some problems. It certainly helps, but I need to really step it up on the ovals. We all do. Yeah, certainly helps us, but this is an oval championship, and I need to keep getting better at them.”
Van Gisbergen didn’t cruise to victory, but it was enough to give him the win on Sunday. Now, van Gisbergen sits 14th in the point standings, looking to make the 16-driver Chase. The Trakchouse Racing driver needed to execute at Sonoma, and he did just that on Sunday afternoon.
