Ohio State and Michigan have been battling for Buckeye State recruit. With the four-star defender choosing the Wolverines, it’s a tough break for Ryan Day’s program.
The Ohio State Buckeyes started the week with a big recruiting win by adding 2027 five-star DL Marcus Fakatou. It was the first of potentially two additions the Buckeyes had eyes on this week.

Ohio State has been battling Michigan in hopes of landing in-state four-star CB Monsanna Torbert. The former Indiana Hoosiers commitment has announced his commitment, and it’s news for the Buckeyes.
Torbert committed to Michigan on Wednesday evening, and there’s already noise out there on why he chose them instead of the Buckeyes.
Ohio State appears to lose top target to Michigan for NIL reasons
Recently before Torbert’s commitment to Michigan, Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong put out an interesting report on where things stood. It was stated that Ohio State had a great shot if they pushed a little harder on the NIL front.

“Michigan is doing all the right things behind the scenes, from a great official visit the weekend of June 19 to the NIL conversations had since; however, it’s not a done deal and Ohio State remains very much in the picture and the Buckeyes are having their own talks with the Torbert camp down the stretch,” Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong said recently. “There are some that believe if Ohio State can get the off-field stuff close they’ll keep Torbert in-state.”
Torbert is the No. 13 cornerback in the country and No. 103 player nationally in the class of 2027, per 247 Sports Composite. Anytime Ohio State loses an in-state player they wanted, it’s a tough loss. It makes things a little tougher when it’s Michigan.
Tim Walton still has two cornerback commitments in this class for Ohio State with four-star recruits Deontay Malone and Jaden Carey. The Buckeyes ideally need three in the class, so now we wait to see where they pivot after missing on Torbert.
