Jaylen Brown never requested a trade from the Boston Celtics and was disappointed by how the organization handled his departure, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
“I’m told Jaylen Brown has been disappointed and disrespected with the way the Celtics have handled this situation, particularly because he never requested a trade,” Charania said.
Brown has already begun settling into Philadelphia, reportedly speaking with Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe shortly after the deal.
Charania reported that after the Celtics failed to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brown believed the relationship could only be repaired with a two-year, $145 million extension.
“My understanding was Jaylen Brown felt disrespected and the only way to recoup the relationship at that point was to give Jaylen Brown that two-year, $145 million extension in July.”
Instead, Boston continued shopping Brown, initially seeking four or five first-round picks before eventually accepting Philadelphia’s offer.
“My understanding in Boston is they felt this was the best it was going to get for Jaylen Brown.”
Charania also reported that while teams called about Jayson Tatum, the Celtics immediately rejected any possibility of trading their franchise star.
