Five-star power forward Marcus Spears Jr., who is one of the nation’s top prospects announced his commitment to the Longhorns on Thursday. He also revealed that he will reclassify from the 2027 recruiting class to 2026. The move allows the star to suit up for Sean Miller’s squad in the upcoming season.
Spears Jr. is the son of former NFL defensive end and ESPN analyst Marcus Spears. He chose Texas over other programs including Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, LSU and Arkansas.

College basketball insider Joe Tipton shared the news on X. While many Longhorns fans celebrated the addition, others questioned whether reclassifying so early was the right decision.
“Literally makes no sense,” one fan wrote.
“He’s not ready. If you seen them playing for that title a few months ago he was horrible,” another user commented.
Some fans took the opportunity to poke fun at Texas.
“Why would he want to miss the tournament a year earlier?” another fan joked.
Not every reaction was critical. .
“Massive. And they get him for 2 years,” one fan posted.
Another Longhorns fan added, “My goodness Texas is gonna be STACKED!!!”
Another fan joked, “Looks like Texas just upgraded from a longhorn to a long-arm. Can’t wait to see those drives turn into slam-dunks.”
Why Did Marcus Spears Jr. Join Texas
Despite the mixed reaction online, Spears Jr. made it clear on why he is excited about joining Sean Miller’s program.

“My relationship with Coach (Sean) Miller is really good,” Spears told Rivals. “He is recruiting me hard, so I’m just taking everything in. I know quite a bit about the basketball program. I went up there with Coach (Rodney) Terry and watched a game. I saw all the facilities and all the training facilities they have up there. And I saw what Coach Miller did last year. I’m interested to see what he does this year because he said he is going to change a little bit. So, I just want to see what they do.”
“Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again, and I am excited to be part of it,” Spears told ESPN. “The Texas fans can expect a worker with a lot of energy. I will be trying to bring Texas a national championship.”
His father also pointed to Miller’s development as one of the biggest reasons behind the decision.
“Marcus Jr. grew up in Texas, and there’s nothing like playing for your home school and winning,” added Spears’ father. “I experienced that growing up in Louisiana at LSU. This is his decision and his future.”

The reclassification process reportedly began only about a month ago after discussions within the Spears family. Marcus Spears Sr. explained that his son embraced the challenge of moving up a class and understood the additional responsibilities that would come with becoming a college freshman a year early.
Spears Jr. averaged 20.9 points and 8.7 rebounds on the Nike EYBL and helped USA Basketball get gold at the 2025 FIBA U16 AmeriCup.
His addition strengthens the Texas roster giving the team the required boost to make a deep run in the upcoming season.
