The Sites of Future International Swimming Championships; China Will Be Busy
The Commonwealth Games will jumpstart what should be a stellar summer of swimming later this week, with that competition being followed by the European Championships and Pan Pacific Championships next month. Meanwhile, the Asian Games are also fast approaching, scheduled for Tokyo in September. But what else is on the horizon? Here’s a look at other future international swimming championships that have been locked in with a site.
2026
- The next version of the World Short Course Championships will be held in Beijing from December 1-6. The meet will be held at the Water Cube, the much-celebrated venue that served as the host of the 2008 Olympic Games.
2027
- For the third time, Budapest will be the host of the World Championships. Budapest was the site of the event in 2017 and 2022, and the 2027 dates are set for July 10-18. The Hungarian city will become the first three-time host.
2028
- SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles is expected to accomodate 40,000 spectators for swimming action when the Olympic Summer Games return to the United States for the first time since 1996. Los Angeles will join Paris and London as the only cities to serve as host for three Olympiads.
2029
- Just three years after Beijing is the site of the World Short Course Championships, it will get its chance to hold the World Champs in the long-course pool. The only other Chinese city to host the World Champs (LC) is Shanghai, which welcomed the 2011 meet.
2032
- Brisbane will become the third Australian city to host the Olympic Games, following Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000). Unlike the previous two Games Down Under, which held competition in October and September, Brisbane will welcome the world from July 23-August 8.
