Texas A&M’s appearance at SEC Media Days can’t be defined as “successful” given the event’s purpose of providing local and national media more insight ahead of the 2026 season, as coach Mike Elko enters his third season with plenty of momentum after leading the Aggies to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history.
Accompanied by redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, senior safety Marcus Ratcliffe, and senior linebacker Daymion Sanford, Elko’s transparency and trust in his roster, even after seeing a record 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, should provide Aggie fans plenty of confidence, despite facing one of the toughest SEC schedules, which has resulted in several 8-4 record predictions.

This offseason, the NCAA passed its latest age-based eligibility ruling, known as the “5 for 5” rule, which will take effect this coming season, giving current and future players five full seasons of eligibility while essentially eliminating traditional and medical redshirting due to the extra year granted.
This ruling will have both positive and negative effects, as fully expected, and for Texas A&M, Mike Elko’s 45 scholarship players, including nine who were set to lose their eligibility before the ruling, will all have decisions to make in the coming months.
“You’re going to see some other programs where I think it’s going to have a massive impact,” Elko stated. “I think back to some of the schools I’ve worked at over the years where getting a lot of fifth-years could make a huge difference in their program. So I just think it’s going to play out differently across the landscape of college football a little bit.”
Marcel Reed, Daymion Sanford, and Marcus Ratcliffe were all asked about their plans after the 2026 season, and they all expressed uncertainty, which is expected given their NFL dreams after three to four seasons in College Station. Nonetheless, how Texas A&M’s 2026 season transpires will dictate all three players’ final decision.
Under Mike Elko and AD Trev Alberts, Texas A&M has successfully navigated the chaotic NIL-driven landscape over the last two seasons, and Elko’s recruiting blueprint, which has led to the No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, should continue to produce elite high school prospects. Still, after each player’s 19th birthday, the countdown begins.
