Michigan basketball reportedly adds Toledo to 2026-27 schedule

Michigan basketball appears to have added another buy-game to its schedule.

The Wolverines are set to host Toledo on Dec. 30, 2026, at Crisler Center as part of their nonconference schedule, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. The two teams have met 23 times in their history, with Michigan winning 15 in a series that date back to the 1918-19 season. The Wolverines have won the past four games in the series, with Toledo’s last victory coming in 1979.

Michigan forward Oscar Goodman (5) attempts a free throw against Oakland during the second half at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor on Monday, November 3, 2025.

U-M’s win streak includes two during the Juwan Howard era: 91-71 in 2020 and 90-80 in the NIT in 2023, when Kobe Bufkin (23 points), Joey Baker (21), Hunter Dickinson (19 points and nine rebounds) and Dug McDaniel (16 points and eight assists) led the way.

The only individual involved in that NIT game remaining in either program is Toledo coach Tod Kowalczyk, who has led the Rockets the past 16 seasons. Toledo has been one of the better teams in the Mid-American Conference over the past decade, with four regular season conference titles from 2020-24, but has not qualified for the NCAA tournament since 1980.

The Rockets have had a winning record every year since 2010-11. Toledo lost its three leading scorers from last season but returns center Austin Parks (10.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game) but added a pair of transfers in point guard Sean Jones (Marquette) and wing Richard Barron (Providence).

Michigan also played Toledo in an exhibition in 2024 and came away with a 96-92 victory in Ann Arbor behind 20 points apiece from L.J. Cason and Roddy Gayle Jr. in the second game of the Dusty May era. No player who appeared in that game remains at U-M.

U-M now has six nonconference games on its slate for the first year under Mike Boynton Jr., as well as three (or possibly four if it reaches the title game) in the Players Era Festival.
