A rogue squirrel grabbed the spotlight in a showdown of teams desperately trying to stay relevant in the American League wild-card race.
As the Detroit Tigers faced the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park on Monday, July 27, a black squirrel managed to make its way onto the field. There was also a dove, but the squirrel had more lasting power and provided unexpected entertainment.
The squirrel circumnavigated the warning track, displaying the kind of speed that would make a racing mascot proud.
Before the bottom of the seventh inning, the Comerica Park grounds crew went out on the field in full force and managed to corral and remove the animal from the field in a towel as some crew members attempted to pick up the squirrel with their bare hands. The squirrel’s speed, ability to swiftly change direction and a low center of gravity made it tough to round up.
