2026 College Football Conference Schedule Breakdown

More than ever before, college football schedules mean everything to the conference championship and the College Football Playoff chase.

Everyone has access to metrics, analytics, and access to every game, but it still comes down to the hype of the top showdowns each week.

Here’s our conference-by-conference breakdown of every schedule going into the 2026 season, with the biggest games, most important things to watch for, and hardest-to-easiest rankings for every league’s slate.

Hardest, Easiest and Biggest Games in Every Conference

ACC Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

Out of all the Power Four conferences, this ACC race will be the quirkiest – again – and it’s because of the schedules.

Remember, last year, Virginia and Duke played for the ACC Championship, and neither one had to play Miami.

The strength of each team’s conference slate will mean everything. But, like last year, we might not know how that shapes up until halfway through the season.

Hardest Schedule: Syracuse

This is where getting hit with the Notre Dame date stings. The Orange miss Miami, but six road games – including to UConn – and hosting a slew of the ACC’s better teams like Clemson, SMU, and Virginia, means there aren’t any real breaks.

Easiest Schedule: Virginia

The Cavaliers miss Clemson, Miami, Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Pitt. There’s only one true road game before October 17th.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Clemson at LSU, September 5
Clemson has lost its last three season openers, including last year to LSU. The rematch is the first game of the Lane Kiffin era, and it’s one of those moments that will set the tone for two programs and be a huge moment for the ACC.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

Do you play Notre Dame, or do you miss the Irish? The five teams that get hit with Notre Dame’s friends with benefits football deal with the ACC are Boston College, Miami, (at) North Carolina, SMU, and (at) Syracuse – and the Irish just do happen to play Stanford, too.

ACC Games of the Season

1. Miami at Clemson, October 3
The Hurricanes have a bizarre ACC start with road games at Stanford and Wake Forest before dealing with the showdown in Death Valley.

2. SMU at Louisville, September 19
SMU starts the ACC season at Florida State, and after this, it’s relatively smooth sailing in ACC play the rest of the way.

3. NC State at Virginia, August 29
Originally slated to open the season in Brazil, these two now play in Charlottesville in a tone-setting showdown that will likely knock out the loser from the ACC title chase.

American Conference Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

It’s a season full of chances in the American Conference with coaching moves at Tulane, North Texas, Memphis, and USF, so the definition of a big game in the conference should change fast.

Hardest Schedule: Rice

With a trip to Notre Dame as tough as any game anyone in the conference has to play, the Owl schedule has a big problem early on. Too many American Conference home games are a bear, including Army, Tulane, and UTSA.

Easiest Schedule: USF

The overall schedule is the league’s easiest thanks to the non-conference slate – this matters with more layups to use as tune-ups for the American schedule.

Delaware State, at Bowling Green, FIU, and Kent State is as easy as it gets. Getting Tulane and Memphis in Tampa matters.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Air Force at Army, November 7
There aren’t any Power Four games on the Knight schedule, and the non-conference games are relatively light. Beat Air Force, and there’s a chance Army could be deep in the College Football Playoff chase if it closes the American season strong.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

Army vs Navy isn’t a conference game. Not only is this its own entity outside of the American Conference Championship – which gets played the week before December 13th – but considering how good these two are, there’s a shot to create a whopper of a problem if one is in the College Football Playoff hunt.

Biggest American Conference Games of the Season

1. Tulane at USF, November 28
How fast will these two gear it back up after dealing with massive changes? If they don’t skip a beat from last year, this should make a huge difference in the American title chase one way or another.

2. Memphis at Navy, November 21
The Midshipmen go from the middle of October until Thanksgiving without a conference road game. If Memphis wants to catch them – Navy closes out the American season with a light game at Charlotte – it has to win this.

3. East Carolina at Army, November 21
Without a slew of brutal games in American play, this could be all that stands between the Pirates and a trip to the conference title game.

Big Ten Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

Sep 6, 2025; Norman, Oklahoma, USA; Michigan Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood (19) rolls out against the Oklahoma Sooners during the first half at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

It’s the problem of an 18-team league with a nine-game Big Ten schedule – the eight teams you miss mean everything. That, and who do you play when and where?

Do you get Ohio State and Indiana, or Purdue and Maryland? Do you have to play a late game in Los Angeles or Seattle, or do you get Oregon or UCLA in your house at noon Eastern on a Saturday? No matter what, though, everyone has landmines to sidestep.

Hardest Schedule: Purdue

This is partly a function of Purdue not being able to play itself – it’s one of our lowest-ranked teams from the Big Ten going into the season – and it’s partly because it has to face Notre Dame and a (seriously, don’t laugh) loaded Wake Forest. Having to go to Indiana, Penn State, and Iowa doesn’t help.

Easiest Schedule: Penn State

Welcome to Happy Valley, Matt Campbell – here’s your present.

Marshall, at Temple, Buffalo as a non-conference schedule to tune everything up. If that wasn’t nice enough, how about missing Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Illinois, and Iowa, and getting USC at home?

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Oklahoma at Michigan, September 12
For everyone expecting the game between that team from Ohio and that other one from Austin, that’s in the SEC section for a reason.

If Michigan can beat Oklahoma, it can probably lose two of the three against Indiana, Ohio State, and Oregon and still be alive for a College Football Playoff spot. Lose to the Sooners, and forget it.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

The air travel for the November 14th games. The Big Ten is a coast-to-coast league, and just when we get into the dog days of the season in mid-November, here come the time-change showdowns.

The Friday night Illinois game at UCLA should end close to midnight Illini time. USC would like the start at Indiana to be a little later, Washington would rather not play a Big Noon Kickoff at Michigan State, and the game-time of Michigan’s trip to Oregon will matter.

Biggest Big Ten Games of the Season

1. Ohio State at Indiana, October 17
It’s a national title-level showdown in mid-October.

2. Oregon at USC, September 26
This isn’t a Big Ten Championship elimination game to start to the conference campaign, but the loser is in huge trouble.

3. Penn State at Michigan, October 17
Make Penn State at Washington No. 3B – that game, and the trip to Ann Arbor, are realistically it for the Nittany Lions in Big Ten play. Win both of them, and they’re (almost certainly) in the College Football Playoff.

Big 12 Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

The Big 12 is far stronger than it was last season, and there shouldn’t be as big a divide between the contenders and everyone else.

However, the defending champion – Texas Tech – doesn’t have a road game against any of the projected conference stars, and the strength of everyone else’s slate is a huge deal.

Hardest Schedule: Colorado

Having to go on the road to play Georgia Tech and Northwestern makes an already tough schedule that much harder. Texas Tech and Utah are home games, but it would’ve been nice to get a few easier dates in Boulder.

Easiest Schedule: Texas Tech

Yes, it helps that Texas Tech is our highest-ranked team – and it obviously can’t play itself – and it also gets the massive break of not playing BYU or Utah.

It’s also about the non-conference schedule without a Power Four game, going against Abilene Christian, at Oregon State, and Sam Houston.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Notre Dame at BYU, October 17
Last season, these two were jilted at the College Football Playoff altar. The Cougars have a few big, nasty games to deal with – at Utah, at TCU, Utah – but beat the loaded Irish, finish at least 10-2, and there will be no ignoring them, or the Big 12, this time around.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

Two huge games on another continent. The 2026 college football season kicks off with TCU having to go to Dublin, Ireland, to face North Carolina. It’ll be a huge showcase moment for the Big 12.

If that wasn’t funky enough, Arizona State and Kansas start their respective Big 12 seasons on September 19th in London. It’s a noon ET kickoff time in the United States, and again, it’s a huge moment for the conference.

Biggest Big 12 Games of the Season

1. BYU at Utah, November 7
Neither one of them plays Texas Tech. There’s a great chance the winner of this marches into the Big 12 Championship.

2. Houston at Texas Tech, September 19
Are the Cougars ready to be a Big 12 player, or are the Red Raiders back up to speed?

3. TCU at Arizona, November 7
This starts a brutal November for the Horned Frogs – neither side can afford to lose this.

Conference USA Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

Who wants the paycheck games, and who – Liberty – doesn’t? Who gets more time to fully jell, and who gets beaten up?

The difference in the Conference USA schedule strengths – for the most part – is almost all about the non-conference runs. Each team has four games outside of the league slate, and there are gigantic swings in the degrees of difficulty.

Hardest Schedule: Western Kentucky

There are five Conference USA home games, and missing FIU isn’t a bad deal, but the trip to New Mexico State is a long one, going to Liberty this year is a bad break, and … at Indiana, at Georgia.

Easiest Schedule: Liberty

The Flames don’t do Power Four games as they ease their way into the season with just four CUSA road games and with no Jacksonville State to face. Going to Kennesaw State is dangerous, but the biggest game might be …

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Liberty at James Madison, September 5
This won’t get a ton of attention in a huge Week 1 full of games, but considering how light the Liberty schedule is, this might be the biggest challenge.

The Flames would’ve made a 12-team playoff in 2023 had the format existed. If they’re good enough to beat JMU on the road, look out.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

There’s one missed Conference USA game for everyone. In a ten-team league with an eight-game conference schedule, that one team off the schedule makes a huge difference. Last year’s season was full of surprises, so it’ll be a fun X factor to see who catches the biggest breaks.

Biggest Conference USA Games of the Season

1. Liberty at Kennesaw State, October 21
This has the potential to be defending CUSA champ Kennesaw State’s most dangerous game.

2. Jacksonville State at Western Kentucky, November 14
This should almost certainly be for a spot in the Conference USA championship, if not a preview of it.

3. Missouri State at Delaware, October 20
The two newcomers to the FBS and Conference USA last year – and after great debuts – get a heat check to see which one is doing a little bit better.

Independent Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

Aug 31, 2025; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback CJ Carr (13) drops back to pass against the Miami Hurricanes during the first quarter at Hard Rock Stadium.

Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

There are just the two independent teams, and strangely enough, Notre Dame and UConn don’t play each other. They obviously don’t have conference championships to play for, but they’re thorns in the side for everyone on their respective schedules.

Hardest Schedule: Notre Dame

Everyone likes to nitpick everything about Notre Dame’s schedule, but even with no USC on it, there’s a lot to deal with playing ten Power Four teams along with a nasty Navy squad.

Easiest Schedule: UConn

There are three Power Four games, and between James Madison, Old Dominion, Miami University, and Air Force, there are several fun games on a good overall schedule.

Most Important Independent Game

Miami at Notre Dame, November 7
Obviously they’re all non-conference games for Notre Dame, this doesn’t technically count as an ACC game, and … this might be the game of the year in college football. There’s a solid shot both teams will be unbeaten when they meet in early November.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

UConn gets the big boys in its house. The Huskies play three Power Four games – Maryland, Syracuse, and North Carolina.

All three have to play in Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. The Huskies went 6-0 at home last year, including a victory over eventual ACC champion Duke.

Biggest Independent Games of the Season

1. Notre Dame at BYU, October 17
Yeah, the Miami game is bigger for the Irish, but there’s a shot this is more dangerous. The Hurricanes have to come to South Bend, while going to Provo is a dangerous midseason trap for the Irish.

2. North Carolina at UConn, November 7
Considering how tough North Carolina’s schedule should be, it can’t afford to lose this. It could be a national moment for the Huskies.

3. Notre Dame vs Wisconsin (in Green Bay), September 6
BE … CAREFUL, Notre Dame. All of the preseason hype and national title hopes won’t go up in smoke if it loses the season opener at Lambeau, but it’ll be a stress-filled season if there’s a misfire.

MAC Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

The MAC just became (almost) coast-to-coast with Sacramento State joining the mix. Now the travel part of the schedules becomes an even bigger deal.

It’s the MAC, and everyone has a few paycheck games, so timing of the four conference home games – and with the weeknight “MACtion” – play a role.

Hardest Schedule: Kent State

The road games at Ohio State and South Carolina take the overall schedule strength up a few notches, and going to USF doesn’t help. The Golden Flashes go on the road for five of their last seven games.

Easiest Schedule: UMass

The two FCS games against Sacred Heart and Stonehill desperately help the Minutemen’s cause, and getting home games against Akron, Ball State, and Eastern Michigan are a huge plus.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Boise State at Western Michigan, September 26
There’s a not-that-crazy chance that this is a late September showdown between two eventual conference champions. There’s an even crazier shot that this will somehow determine the Group of Six spot in the College Football Playoff.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

Sacramento State has turned things funky. It’s almost 3,000 miles from Amherst, Massachusetts to Sacramento, and 2,300 miles for the Hornets to open the season up at Eastern Michigan. It’ll be a long, tough road trip for Ball State, Kent State, Toledo, and UMass to deal with.

Biggest MAC Games of the Season

1. Western Michigan at Toledo, October 24
The loser is probably out of the MAC Championship race.

2. Miami University at Central Michigan, October 24
This is when one of these two makes a statement and gets deep into the MAC hunt.

3. Ohio at Kent State, October 3
It’s the MAC opener for Ohio, and it has to deal with a Kent State team looking to capitalize on the momentum of last year.

Mountain West Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

Don’t think the Mountain West schedules got easier just because most of the top programs took off for the Pac-12.

Every team still has to face a slew of tough non-conference dates, one missed conference game that should turn out to be a big deal overall, and lots and lots of travel.

Hardest Schedule: UNLV

Cal is the only Power Four game, and it’s a home date. The Hawaii game starts the Mountain West season, and that’s followed by a trip to North Texas, and after a week off, there’s a trip to Akron. The road games are winnable, but that’s three in a row.

Easiest Schedule: North Dakota State

There aren’t any dates against Power Four teams, and the home games against Fordham, Jacksonville State, UTEP, and Northern Illinois drag the overall schedule score down.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Cal at UNLV, October 3rd
It won’t be easy for a Mountain West team, no matter how good, to push out any of the other top Group of Six champion options out of the College Football Playoff. UNLV is the realistic best hope, and it must beat a solid Cal team.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

The travel. There’s cross-country travel for a game here and there, and then there’s having to go to El Paso, or DeKalb, or Fargo, or Laramie.

Northern Illinois will fly 4,200 miles to Honolulu in mid-October to play Hawaii.

Biggest Mountain West Games of the Season

1. UNLV at New Mexico, November 14
The Lobos should’ve been in the Mountain West Championship last year instead of UNLV – there was a strange tie-breaker quirk. You’re going to hear that a lot leading up to this revenge moment for the Lobos.

2. North Dakota State at Air Force, September 12
Is North Dakota State really about to take the FBS world by storm? It’ll beat Jacksonville State and Fordham to start the season, and here’s the chance to show that it’ll be a Mountain West player from jump.

3. Hawaii at Wyoming, September 26
The Rainbow Warriors are among the true contenders for the Mountain West title. After starting against UNLV, they’ll play over 7,000 feet above sea level against a Wyoming team that needs this to get the program back on track.

Mountain West Schedule Rankings: Hardest to Easiest

Pac-12 Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

There’s a real Pac-12 schedule again this season. Everyone plays everyone else, and each game should be a battle.

The schedule strength is relatively even across the board, with everything potentially coming down to an extra conference flex game that will make or break seasons in everyone’s regular season finale.

Hardest Schedule: Washington State

Washington State and Oregon State are in the same boat. The only two members of last year’s Pac-12 kept some of their bigger games.

The difference is that Oregon State has two Power Four battles, and Washington State has three, including dates at Washington and Kansas State, along with the home game against Arizona.

Easiest Schedule: Texas State

The Bobcats kept their non-conference schedule intact – at Texas, and three home games against Texas schools. They only leave the state once until Halloween, and unlike most Pac-12 schools, only have five road games.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Boise State at Oregon, September 5
No one’s expecting the Broncos to beat the loaded Ducks on the road, but this is a measuring stick for the rest of the conference. As long as there’s a good showing, it’ll be a strong moment for Pac-12 national credibility – fair or not – on a national scale.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

The flex. It’s only an eight-team Pac-12 – for now – so it’s easy to create a seven-game conference schedule. The solution to avoid playing an extra non-conference game is a one-game rematch.

For example, Utah State opens the Pac-12 season at Boise State, and then the Broncos go to Logan in Week 12. Texas State at Colorado State, San Diego State at Fresno State, and Oregon State at Washington State are the other three.

Biggest Pac-12 Games of the Season

1. Boise State at Fresno State, October 10
A huge matchup of former Mountain West teams will set the tone for the Pac-12 race early on.

2. Washington State at San Diego State, October 31
San Diego State was rolled by Wazzu 36-13 last year. This time around, the Cougars will be coming off a date with Boise State, and it’ll be the third road game in four weeks.

3. Oregon State at Colorado State, October 3
It’s the Pac-12 opener for two new coaching staffs with two rebuilt teams. It’ll also be the end of a big run for four home games in the first five weeks for the Rams.

SEC Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

Dec 6, 2025; Atlanta, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton (14) throws a pass during the second quarter against the Alabama Crimson Tide during the 2025 SEC Championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

There’s no running or hiding from the SEC schedule, with the lesser teams from last year improved, the top programs from last year looking stronger, and a better conference all-around from top to bottom. And because of it, the non-conference games mean even more.

Lose one game outside of the SEC – like Texas did against Ohio State last season – and that might be in for any College Football Playoff dreams.

Hardest Schedule: Texas

Start with the rematch against Ohio State, throw in three road games in the final four weeks, and include the dates away from Austin against Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Give credit for not playing any FCS teams, making the nation’s toughest schedule even nastier.

Easiest Schedule: Auburn

Auburn’s dates with Samford and Southern Miss make up the difference between having the easiest schedule in the SEC and one of the toughest.

There’s nothing easy about going to Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, but there are enough winnable games – missing Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M helps – to have a stronger season.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Ohio State at Texas, September 12
This is it. This is the game that could define the entire season and the perception of the two power conferences right away.

Ohio State held on last year 14-7, and with the brutal schedule ahead, Texas needs this, or getting to the College Football Playoff will be an almost impossible task.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

The travel (or lack of it). The ACC, Big Ten, and Big 12 are flying all over the country every week. Meanwhile, the SEC mostly keeps its games around the same general area of the country.

There are a few big road trips – it’ll be over a thousand miles for Florida fans to drive to see their Gators play Missouri – but for the most part, the charm of the SEC is the geographic familiarity.

This year, Arkansas goes to Salt Lake City to face Utah, Mississippi State is traveling to Minnesota, and Oklahoma has the showdown at Michigan, but those feel so fish-out-of-water interesting for a reason.

Biggest SEC Games of the Season

1. Oklahoma vs Texas (in Dallas), October 10
The importance of this takes on a higher level one way or another depending on how the Longhorns do against Ohio State and how the Sooners fare at Michigan. No matter what, the Red River Rivalry is now a full-on SEC showdown.

2. Georgia at Alabama, October 10
It was a game so nice they played it twice last year. This time around, there’s a good chance it’ll be a College Football Playoff elimination game.

3. LSU at Ole Miss, September 19
There might be bigger and more important games to pick from the fantastic SEC schedule, but come on – Lane Kiffin in Oxford in the SEC opener? Let’s go.

Sun Belt Football Schedule Breakdown 2026

Texas State is gone to the new Pac-12, Louisiana Tech is in, and the conference is coming off a James Madison run to the College Football Playoff.

There’s still as much disparity between the stars and the mediocre as any conference in college football, and with the divisional format and an eight-game season, who you get and don’t from the other division means almost everything.

Hardest Schedule: Southern Miss

About that disparity in divisions, Southern Miss got the bad break of facing the two best teams from the East, James Madison and Old Dominion. Combine that with road games to Auburn, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, and Troy, and it’s a rough run.

Easiest Schedule: Marshall

Again with the divisions, Marshall is helped by facing projected meh ULM and South Alabama teams from the West. The non-conference schedule lightens up fast after starting out at Penn State.

Most Important Non-Conference Game

Old Dominion at Virginia Tech, September 12
New pieces are around now, but no one ran for more yards on Indiana last year than ODU. The Monarchs have beaten the Hokies three times in seven meetings since moving up to the FBS in 2013, including last year’s 45-26 walloping.

Biggest Schedule Quirk

The Sun Belt is still the one conference with divisions. And that’s a bit of an issue.

App State, Coastal Carolina, and Marshall are all trying to rebuild, but the East is still the far better of the two divisions, with James Madison and Old Dominion the projected stars of the conference.

Biggest Sun Belt Games of the Season

1. James Madison at Old Dominion, September 26
The Dukes walloped ODU 63-27 last year. It should be a little tighter this year in the almost certain battle for the Sun Belt East.

2. Troy at Arkansas State, November 28
It’s the last game of the regular season for a reason. Louisiana and Louisiana Tech will have their say, but this will be a big deal in the West race.

3. Louisiana Tech at Georgia Southern, November 28
If nothing else, this interdivisional matchup should have plenty of scoring in what should be one of the most entertaining games of the Sun Belt season.
