Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables is one of the greatest defensive minds in the history of college football. Venables has won three national championships as a defensive coordinator in his career.
He’s brought that defensive prowess back to Norman. In four years, he moved Oklahoma from the No. 122 defense in college football to a top 10 unit last season. His creativity and aggressive playcalling often times confuse even some of the best quarterbacks in the sport. The quarterbacks he does best against are freshman or redshirt freshman starters.

In fact, according to CBS Sports, Venables is an impressive 22-5 since 2012 against freshman or redshirt freshman quarterbacks. Last season, his defense feasted on Michigan Wolverines true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood. The top player in the 2025 class threw for 142 yards, while completing 9-of-24 passes. He also rushed three times for -1 yards in Oklahoma’s 24-13 win.
While Underwood has a year under his belt as a starter, he will have a new offensive coordinator in Jason Beck. On3’s J.D. PicKell predicted the Sooners’ 2026 season outlook. He has Oklahoma defeating the Wolverines again this season, this time in Ann Arbor. PicKell believes Venables’ defensive prowess will cause major problems for Underwood and Beck.
“This will be Bryce Underwood’s first Power Four start against a Power Four defense in Jason Beck’s system,” PicKell said on ‘The Hard Count.’ “… With it being the second game of the season and it being that spot for Bryce Underwood and Jason Beck, I think Brent Venables is your boogeyman. I don’t like that at all.”
If Oklahoma’s defense performs at the level it did a season ago, the Sooners could once again make life miserable for an inexperienced offense. While Underwood is among the most talented quarterbacks in college football, facing a Venables defense early in the season while learning a new system will be one of the toughest tests of his young career.
