Penny Hardaway believes the 1996 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team deserves recognition as the second-best American squad ever assembled, placing it behind only the iconic 1992 Dream Team while acknowledging the star power of later generations.
Speaking about where the 1996 “Dream Team III” ranks among Team USA’s greatest rosters, Hardaway said his group’s balance and depth give it the edge over more recent Olympic champions led by players such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant.
“I’m not trying to disrespect D-Wade, LeBron, KD, Kobe, and those guys,” Hardaway said. “I have to feel that way. I feel like our team was well-rounded. We had an opportunity to do something special. I do know the magnitude of having LeBron and D-Wade, and those guys. So I still feel like we’re the second-best team behind the original Dream Team.”
Hardaway’s comments compare two of the deepest eras in USA Basketball history. The 1992 Dream Team remains the benchmark for international basketball after becoming the first U.S. Olympic team to feature active NBA players. That roster included Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin and Christian Laettner.
The 1992 team dominated the Barcelona Olympics, winning all eight games by an average margin of more than 43 points while capturing the gold medal without facing a serious challenge. Its overwhelming success helped accelerate the globalization of basketball and inspired a generation of international players.
Four years later, the United States returned to the Olympics in Atlanta with another loaded roster. The 1996 squad featured Hardaway alongside Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Scottie Pippen, Grant Hill, Reggie Miller, Gary Payton, Mitch Richmond and John Stockton.
Like the 1992 team, the Americans finished unbeaten and claimed the gold medal. Team USA went 8-0 in Atlanta and defeated Yugoslavia 95-69 in the championship game. Barkley led the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game while shooting 81.6% from the field, and Hardaway contributed 9.3 points and 3.8 assists per contest.
Hardaway acknowledged the extraordinary talent assembled on later Olympic teams, particularly those featuring LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Wade and Durant. The 2008 “Redeem Team” restored the United States to the top of international basketball after the disappointing bronze-medal finish in 2004, while Durant became Team USA’s all-time leading Olympic scorer across four gold-medal runs.
Even so, Hardaway believes the overall balance of the 1996 roster separates it from those later editions. With Hall of Famers at every position and multiple MVPs, Defensive Players of the Year and scoring champions in the rotation, he sees the Atlanta gold-medal team as the closest successor to the original Dream Team.
