NCAA Recruiting Periods for Swimmers: What Are Dead Periods and Recruiting Shutdowns?
College recruiting is in full swing, with the class of 2028 now able to speak in person with NCAA coaches, schedule visits, and receive offers.
As high school juniors and seniors approach the first recruiting shutdown of the season, it’s important to understand what types of communication are allowed during certain times of the year.
During the majority of the recruiting process, coaches are allowed to:
- Call, text, email, and DM you
- Attend your meets and watch you compete
- Make in-person contact with you on or off campus
- Host you for official and unofficial campus visits
- Extend verbal offers
This is the default state for swimming recruiting. The recruiting shutdowns and dead periods listed below are the exceptions.
NCAA Division I has specific recruiting calendars for each sport, highlighting certain weeks where recruiting communications are limited or fully prohibited. See the Division I swimming and diving recruiting calendar below.
Recruiting Shutdown Official Definition:
“A recruiting shutdown is a period of time when no form of recruiting (e.g., contacts, evaluations, official or unofficial visits, correspondence, or making or receiving telephone calls) is permissible.”
In other words, all forms of communication with college coaches stop.
Dead Period Official Definition:
“A dead period is that period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the member institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus.”
Although the period is called a “dead” period, coaches can still call, text, and email you. They just cannot meet you in person.
Why Do Dead Periods and Recruiting Shutdowns Exist?
These periods aim to give coaches and athletes a break from the recruiting process, allowing them to focus on what’s at hand. The first recruiting shutdown hits right as college athletes move back into their dorms and kick off the college season. During this time, coaches focus on the collegiate season and acclimating new athletes, conducting team meetings, and aligning goals for the season. High schoolers begin their semester and a new training cycle.
The November dead period serves to protect high school senior athletes right before the early signing day.
The December shutdown falls during the holiday season, forcing high school prospects and coaches to take a break from recruiting.
Lastly, the February shutdown lands during conference championship meets, giving coaches the space to focus on their current athletes and prep for championship season.
Division II, III, and NAIA
It’s important to note that D-II Swimming has one dead period: The Signing Date Dead Period – November 9 at 7:00 a.m. through November 11 at 7:00 a.m.. D-III and NAIA do not have dead periods or recruiting shutdowns.
