The Top 10 Best Coaches in College Football Heading Into the 2026 Season

College football is filled with elite coaches, but heading into the 2026 season, some enter the year with much bigger expectations than others.

From coaches expected to compete for a national championship to others trying to prove their program belongs among the sport’s elite, Fan Army’s Top 10 features some of the biggest names in the game. Ryan Day takes the No. 1 spot, followed by Kirby Smart and Curt Cignetti, while new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin lands at No. 6.

Here’s a look at the Top 10 and what should be expected from each coach and their program in 2026.

1. Ryan Day — Ohio State

At Ohio State, simply winning games isn’t enough. The Buckeyes are expected to compete for the Big Ten and the national championship every season, and that remains the standard for Ryan Day in 2026.

Ohio State went 12-0 during the 2025 regular season before dropping its final two games in the Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff. Now Day has to get the Buckeyes back on track against a brutal schedule that includes road games at Texas, Indiana and USC, along with Oregon and Michigan coming to Columbus. Quarterback Julian Sayin also returns after throwing for 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns last season.

Anything short of another serious playoff run will feel disappointing in Columbus. Day has built Ohio State into one of the most consistent programs in the country, but 2026 gives him another opportunity to add hardware.

2. Kirby Smart — Georgia

Kirby Smart has reached the point where Georgia is judged almost entirely by championships. Winning 10 or 11 games is great for most programs; in Athens, the expectation is to compete for the SEC title and be playing deep into the College Football Playoff.

Smart has already established Georgia as one of college football’s premier programs, and that isn’t changing entering 2026. The Bulldogs should once again be measured against the best teams in the SEC rather than simply against a win total.

The expectation is straightforward: make the playoff and give Georgia a legitimate chance to win another national championship.

3. Curt Cignetti — Indiana

Few coaches have changed the expectations around a program as quickly as Curt Cignetti.

Indiana is no longer a team that can simply surprise people and call the season a success. Cignetti has raised the standard to the point where the Hoosiers enter 2026 expected to compete with the top programs in the Big Ten.

That’s what makes this season so interesting. Getting a program to the top is difficult; keeping it there can be even harder. If Cignetti can keep Indiana in the national conversation, it will further prove that what he has built isn’t going away anytime soon.

4. Steve Sarkisian — Texas

Texas is back among the programs where championships are the expectation, and Steve Sarkisian deserves plenty of credit for getting it there.

Now comes the pressure of staying there.

The Longhorns have the talent and resources to compete with anybody in college football, meaning another College Football Playoff push should be the expectation. Texas doesn’t need to prove it belongs anymore. The next step for Sarkisian is finishing the job and bringing a national championship back to Austin.

5. Dan Lanning — Oregon

Dan Lanning has turned Oregon into one of the biggest threats in the Big Ten and nationally, but the Ducks are reaching the point where simply being in the championship conversation isn’t enough.

Oregon has recruited at an elite level and has shown it can compete with the biggest programs in the country. In 2026, the Ducks should once again be expected to fight for a Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff spot.

For Lanning, the ultimate goal is breaking through and delivering Oregon its first national championship.

6. Lane Kiffin — LSU

Perhaps nobody on this list enters 2026 with more attention surrounding him than Lane Kiffin.

After leaving Ole Miss for LSU, Kiffin takes over one of the most talented and demanding programs in college football. LSU didn’t make this move just to become competitive in the SEC. The Tigers brought Kiffin to Baton Rouge to chase championships.

Kiffin has already made a major impact through the transfer portal, assembling what has been described as the nation’s top transfer class. Expectations around the program have quickly climbed, with LSU viewed as a legitimate playoff contender entering his first season.

There may be some growing pains with a new staff, but patience won’t last long at LSU. Kiffin was hired to win big, and a strong playoff push would immediately show that the Tigers made the right move.

7. Kalen DeBoer — Alabama

Following the standard set at Alabama is one of the toughest jobs in college football, and Kalen DeBoer continues to face massive expectations in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama expects championships. That’s the reality of the job.

For DeBoer, 2026 is another opportunity to establish the Crimson Tide as his program and keep Alabama among the SEC’s elite. A College Football Playoff appearance should be the expectation, but the bigger goal is proving Alabama remains a legitimate national championship threat.

8. Marcus Freeman — Notre Dame

Marcus Freeman has continued pushing Notre Dame toward the top tier of college football, and expectations have grown with the program.

The Fighting Irish aren’t looking just to reach the playoff anymore. They want to make a deep run once they’re there.

Notre Dame should once again have the talent to compete nationally, and Freeman’s next challenge is turning consistency into a championship. Another playoff-caliber season should be expected, with anything beyond that further strengthening Freeman’s place among the best coaches in the sport.

9. Mario Cristobal — Miami

Miami has spent years trying to return to national prominence, and Mario Cristobal has put the Hurricanes in position where major expectations are once again realistic.

Now Miami has to capitalize.

The Hurricanes should be expected to compete near the top of the ACC and remain in the College Football Playoff conversation throughout the season. At a program with Miami’s history, recruiting base and resources, competing for championships is ultimately the standard.

Cristobal has helped build the roster. The expectation in 2026 is to turn that talent into another major season.

10. Rhett Lashlee — SMU

Rhett Lashlee rounds out the Top 10 after helping transform SMU into a program capable of competing on a national stage.

The challenge now is sustaining it.

SMU doesn’t carry the same historical expectations as Ohio State, Georgia or Alabama, which makes what Lashlee has built even more impressive. The Mustangs should enter 2026 believing they can compete near the top of the ACC and put themselves in the playoff conversation.

Another strong season would continue to prove that SMU’s rise isn’t temporary.
