West Coast nightmares continue to haunt the Brewers as the San Diego Padres finish the three-game series sweep in a 4-3 extra-inning affair. The Brewers are now 4-8 on the season when playing on the West Coast.
From Dustin May‘s stellar seven-inning performance to the four double plays turned by the defense, followed by a bullpen blowup and some other critical mistakes, today’s game was filled with a lot of ups and downs. Things didn’t get off on the right foot either in the bottom of the second as Joey Ortiz mishandled a groundball to allow Luis Rengifo to reach base safely. He did make it up a play later by turning the first of four double plays.

Entering today’s ballgame, the Brewers had scored just four runs all series, which is a sight for sore eyes compared to what we’ve seen from this team all season. With the team avoiding some major injuries a night ago, the offense needed a spark, and that’s what Gary Sánchez gave to them in the top of the second inning with a solo home run to left field.
Despite the rocky defensive play all series, and the rough start from Ortiz early in the first inning, the defense felt like it finally found its groove. During the bottom of the second inning, Jackson Merrill grounded into the Padres’ second straight double play to quickly give his team two outs. Quickly resulting into another 1-2-3 inning as Austin Hays grounded out shortly thereafter.
Playing in his first game since August 8, Ortiz was trying to be another man in this lineup to provide another pop, but instead of using his bat, he walked with one out in the top of the third inning. After advancing to second base on a groundout, Brice Turang drove in Ortiz with a single to extend the Brewers’ lead to 2-0.

May was stellar this afternoon in his second appearance in a Brewers uniform, throwing a quick and efficient seven innings of one-run ball on just four hits and two walks, while striking out six batters. His one blemish of the game came in the bottom of the third when Xander Bogaerts hit his 10th home run of the season to cut the Brewers’ lead down to 2-1.
In terms of offense, both sides were quite stale going forward. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the bases were loaded for the Padres, with one out. In dire need to get out of the inning to maintain their lead, May forced Hays into an inning-ending double play, making it the third double play grounded into by the Padres in the game.
From that point on, the Padres offense was retired in order until the bottom of the eighth inning. Pat Murphy sent May back out to the mound for his eighth inning of work, as he had thrown less than 80 pitches at that point in the ballgame. A decision that felt like a no-brainer considering the four-game series with the Dodgers looming beginning tomorrow.
May came out and walked Gavin Sheets on four straight balls to open up the bottom of the eighth. Chad Patrick then replaced May, and he then forced Bogaerts into a double play, clearing all but one from the bases. Then the command issues came for Patrick as he loaded the bases on back-to-back walks. Following the second walk, Aaron Ashby came in to take things over. Brewers killer Jake Cronenworth then singled to score Fernando Tatis Jr. to tie the game at 2-2.

Nothing happened on offense for the Brewers in the top of the ninth, but the Padres continued to be pesky, and more so, Merrill continued to be pesky, as he doubled with one out. After Luis Campusano popped out for the second out of the inning, Jase Bowen lined a ball into center field, where Garrett Mitchell stretched out to take away the win for the Padres, leaving the game at 2-2.
After another quiet 10th inning from both offenses, the Brewers finally broke the silence in the top of the 11th inning. Once again, it was Sánchez who came through with the clutch hit as he doubled a ball off the third base bag to score Jihwan Bae, giving the Brewers a 3-2 lead. After a Mitchell walk with no outs, David Hamilton and Ortiz followed with strikeouts of their own to quickly put the Brewers down. Padres then walked Jackson Chourio before getting Turang to strike out to end the inning, wasting valuable time to extend the Brewers’ lead.
Antonio Senzatela replaced closer Trevor Megill on the bump for the bottom of the 11th inning and was out to a great start by forcing a groundout. Then, Merrill drove in the tying run with a flyout to left field that should’ve been more if it wasn’t for Luis Lara’s spectacular catch. While trying to ride high on the catch, Campusano hit a single to drive in the winning run, securing the series sweep of the Brewers.

Looking back at this series, offense was the main issue, as it feels like almost everyone is in a slump. Today, though Sánchez carried the offense, he also hurt the defensive side of the ball with several passed balls and a play at the end of the game that resulted in poor positioning. Certainly not the way the Brewers want to be feeling heading into a four-game series with the Dodgers.
Despite getting two quality starts from Logan Henderson and May, the Brewers will look to get back on track tomorrow in Los Angeles with Shane Drohan on the mound. The offense will also look to generate more runs in this next series, as against the Padres they were 2-for-24 with runners in scoring position.
