Kurt Busch has pushed back against Carson Hocevar’s claim that NASCAR is on ‘a ventilator’, warning the young driver not to undermine the sport that has helped build his career.
Hocevar made the comments after a disappointing Brickyard 400, arguing that NASCAR’s broadcasts needed to improve and that the sport was no longer what it was in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The 23-year Cup Series veteran understands some of the frustration, but believes Hocevar needs to be careful about how he delivers his message.

Speaking on the Rubbin is Racing podcast, Busch offered a direct message to Hocevar.
‘I mean, come on, kid. You know, you can’t shoot your own foot here. You’re making money in the sport. You’re becoming a superstar. They love you. Embrace it,’ Busch said.
Busch does not believe NASCAR is in the poor state Hocevar suggested. Instead, he pointed to several changes that have been made to improve the racing and respond to fans.

The former driver highlighted the Gen 7 cars, increased horsepower at shorter tracks and the addition of new venues. He also praised the Chicago Street Race and Anduril 250, while noting the return of North Wilkesboro.
NASCAR has also acted after criticism of the Brickyard 400, with CEO Steve O’Donnell introducing changes to stage-racing rules soon afterwards.
That is why Busch believes Hocevar should focus on what NASCAR is doing rather than attacking the organisation publicly.

However, Busch still sees plenty to like about Hocevar. He considers the Spire Motorsports driver talented and believes he can develop into one of NASCAR’s biggest stars.

There is just one condition.
Hocevar needs to be willing to listen.
Busch recalled how veteran drivers such as Richard Petty, Terry Labonte and Mark Martin confronted him during his own career. Those conversations helped him mature rather than simply becoming known for controversy.
Asked what he would do if Hocevar refused to learn, Busch pointed to his own experience with Austin Cindric.
‘If it was coachable, like I think Hocevar is, you help,’ Busch said. ‘If it’s somebody that’s just way out there and they don’t want to listen… then you’re going to learn the hard way.’

Hocevar’s personality is clearly part of what makes him appealing. Busch’s message is simply that the young driver needs to make sure his outspoken nature does not become the thing that holds his NASCAR career back.
