The Montreal Canadiens should be open to the possibility of bringing in a player on a professional tryout (PTO) agreement for training camp. There are some free agents left who could be interesting players for the Canadiens to take a look at with a PTO.
One specific UFA forward who could make sense for the Canadiens to sign to a PTO is winger Michael Bunting.

When looking at Montreal’s current roster, it would not hurt for them to add more depth on the wing. A player like Bunting would be an intriguing player for them to take a chance on, as he has shown during his career that he can provide decent secondary offensive production. He is also known for his pesky style of play, so he could give Montreal’s lineup more bite, too.
If Bunting impressed on a PTO with the Canadiens and earned a contract for the season, he could offer them another solid option for their bottom six. He could provide Montreal with more depth scoring, which would not be a bad thing in the slightest for the Original Six club.
Bunting appeared in 74 games during the 2025-26 season, where he recorded 14 goals and 33 points. This was after he posted 19 goals and 38 points in 79 games during the 2024-25 campaign. With numbers like these, he could give Montreal’s bottom six a bit of a boost if signed to a short-term deal.
