Why NASCAR Fans Still Refuse to Respect Joey Logano And How He Now Races “4 the Haters”

Joey Logano has never been a driver everyone loves.

The Team Penske star has spent much of his career being booed, criticized and questioned. Now, even after winning three NASCAR Cup Series championships, some fans still don’t believe he gets enough credit.

Logano won his first title in 2018, followed by another in 2022 and his third in 2024. All three came under NASCAR’s elimination-style playoff system, which has made him one of the biggest targets for fans who don’t like the format.

The criticism became especially loud after his 2024 championship. Logano finished that season with a 17.1 average finish, yet won the title at Phoenix.

For some fans, that was proof that the playoff system was broken. For Logano, it was simply the system everyone agreed to race under.

And he has clearly heard the “Mickey Mouse champion” comments.

Why Has Logano Always Been So Polarizing?

Part of the answer goes back to the beginning of his Cup career.

Logano was heavily hyped as a teenager. Mark Martin called him a racing prodigy when he was just 15, and he eventually landed the famous No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota at only 18.

That kind of early attention came with plenty of criticism. Some fans saw him as a driver who had been given a big opportunity because of his background and family support rather than having to fight for it the hard way.

Logano has also admitted that he was cocky when he first entered the Cup Series.

Then came the on-track incidents. His clashes with drivers such as Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin helped build his reputation as one of NASCAR’s more aggressive drivers.

The 2013 confrontation with Stewart became particularly memorable. The two had a heated exchange after Logano’s aggressive blocking during the race.

His feud with Harvick also produced one of the most talked-about comments of Logano’s early career, when he took a shot at Harvick’s wife during an interview.

Those moments helped create the image that still follows Logano today. He races hard. He isn’t afraid to make contact. And when he believes he is right, he usually doesn’t back down. That has made him a hero to some fans and a villain to others.

Because all three of his titles came through NASCAR’s playoff system, critics have argued that Logano benefited from a format that rewards performance at the right moment rather than consistency over the entire season. Logano doesn’t buy that argument.

Racing – and winning – “4 the Haters”

If anything, the criticism seems to motivate him. Speaking after his win at Richmond, Logano was asked about fans who question whether his championships are legitimate.

His answer was direct. “To answer the question first, they’re all legit,” said Logano. “I don’t care what the format is. Everyone knew the rules when it started, okay? I’ll say that first.”

Logano even revealed what his team has written inside the hauler. “4 the Haters.”
