Alabama football‘s quarterback competition is officially over, and the Crimson Tide is putting its offense in the hands of sophomore Keelon Russell.
After weeks of competition between Russell and veteran Austin Mack, Alabama has named Russell its starting quarterback for the 2026 season. The former five-star recruit will take over as the Crimson Tide’s starter less than two weeks before the season opener against East Carolina.

While Alabama’s coaching staff spent much of fall camp emphasizing that the competition was close, quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis offered a clear explanation to Yea Alabama for why Russell ultimately won the job.
According to Ellis, it came down to one defining trait: playmaking ability.
“Keelon is gonna be the starting quarterback here because he’s a playmaker,” Ellis told Yea Alabama. “He’s the guy that we know when the ball is in his hands, a lot of good shit can happen.
“As coaches and as his coach, we have to limit the bad stuff and the ‘young-player plays’, but when the ball is in his hands, we have the ability to be an extremely explosive offense, and that’s fun to see.”
Keelon Russell Gives Alabama an Explosive Element
Ellis’ comments provide perhaps the clearest explanation yet for why Alabama ultimately chose Russell over Mack.

The Crimson Tide clearly believes Russell gives the offense a higher ceiling because of what he can create with the football in his hands.
That does not mean Alabama expects Russell to be perfect.
In fact, Ellis openly acknowledged that the coaching staff still has to eliminate some of the mistakes that come with playing a young quarterback. Russell has only appeared in two games during his Alabama career, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing three times for 17 yards.
But the potential is obvious.
Russell brings the arm talent to attack defenses vertically, while his mobility creates another problem for opposing defenses when plays break down. That combination is a major reason Alabama believes its offense can become more explosive with him under center.

The decision also represents a significant bet on Russell’s upside.
He entered Alabama as the No. 2 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class, according to 247Sports, and was regarded as one of the nation’s elite quarterback prospects.
Now, Alabama is allowing him to prove that potential on the biggest stage.
The challenge for Ellis, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, and head coach Kalen DeBoer will be finding the right balance between allowing Russell to make plays and preventing the mistakes that come with inexperience.
That’s exactly what Ellis was referencing when he said the coaching staff has to limit the “young-player plays.”

If Alabama can do that, the Crimson Tide believes Russell has the ability to make the offense extremely difficult to defend.
The quarterback competition may be over, but the real evaluation of Russell is just beginning.
Alabama will open the 2026 season against East Carolina on Sept. 5, with Russell officially taking the reins of the Crimson Tide offense.
For Alabama, the message from Ellis is clear: Russell won the job because the Crimson Tide believes his playmaking ability can unlock an explosive offense.
