Pair of 5th Year Players No Longer Practicing With Washington Huskies

The Washington Huskies football team has arguably the deepest defense it’s had in years.

The linebacking core and defensive line boasts a strong combination of youth and veteran experience that could help the Huskies manage the high octane offenses in the Big Ten.

The special teams unit will likely be a notable unit as well, as both punter Hunter Green and kicker Tyler Robles were named to preseason watchlists.

However, the Huskies recently experienced a pair of losses on the roster via a decision completely out of the program’s and players’ respective hands.

Earlier this offseason, a court order against the NCAA allowed players from the recruiting Class of 2022 who enrolled in the 2023-24 a fifth year of eligibility.

The NCAA established new rules this offseason allowing five years of eligibility and doing away with redshirts and medical waivers. Players who enroll in the Class of 2027 will play completely under the NCAA’s new guidelines. Athletes who enrolled from 2023-26 will have the opportunity due to grandfather into and play a fifth year.

Due to the cutoff being after the Class of ’22, players have attempted lawsuits in their respective states to try and get that fifth year of eligibility. Earlier this summer, a U.S. District Court judge in Colorado decided against the NCAA in a class-wide injunction.

This resulted in fifth-year defensive tackle Ta’ita’i Uiagalelei and fifth-year kicker Grady Gross both returning to practice for Washington.
