VJ Edgecombe is not concerned that the Philadelphia 76ers’ additions of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown could reduce his offensive role in 2026-27. The second-year guard said he intends to remain aggressive regardless of how many shots he receives.
“I mean, it don’t matter what happens, there’s always going to be someone that has something to say,” Edgecombe said, per Chris Hine of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “But I just want to win. I’m going to still be aggressive, still be myself. If that comes with less shots or more shots, who knows.”
Edgecombe enters his second NBA season after averaging 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 75 games, starting all 75. The 21-year-old shot 43.8% from the field and 35.4% from three-point range while playing 35.0 minutes per game and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting.
Philadelphia’s roster has changed substantially since that rookie campaign. The 76ers acquired Brown from the Boston Celtics in a July trade that sent Paul George and draft compensation in the other direction, then signed James in free agency to join Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
The changes could significantly alter Edgecombe’s place in the offense. He ranked fourth on the 2025-26 76ers in scoring and attempted 13.7 field goals per game, behind Maxey’s 21.4 and Embiid’s 18.3, while George averaged 13.9 attempts before being traded.
Philadelphia also lost several perimeter contributors from last season. Kelly Oubre Jr., who averaged 14.1 points in 50 games, signed with Indiana, while Quentin Grimes departed join the Lakers after averaging 13.4 points across 75 appearances.
Edgecombe said his focus is on adapting to the team’s new structure rather than protecting his individual workload.
“I don’t know how the course of the game is going to go,” Edgecombe said. “I’m just excited to play alongside my teammates. I think we have a chance to do something really special.”
The 76ers finished 45-37 in 2025-26, seventh in the Eastern Conference, before beating Boston in seven games in the first round and being swept 4-0 by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks in the conference semifinals.
