As I was preparing the Marquette volleyball season preview, I realized that freshman outside hitter Allie Beers is wearing #6 for the Golden Eagles. Obviously, the next thing to do is go see if she’s in the official NIL Store. SURE IS, and back in early August, you could go get yourself a nice shirsey with a Marquette logo on the front and a straight forward jersey-style “BEERS 6” on the back.
Skip forward a few days, and all of a sudden, Allie Beers was one of the 10 best selling athletes on the NIL Store in the entire country. SEEMS GOOD, for her bank account, at the very least. Skip forward another couple of days, and Ben Steele at the Journal Sentinel talked to Beers about future plans and her conversations with Madi Dunker, MU’s director of NIL strategy & athlete marketing.
“We have to be careful of what we sell,” she said. “But I think we’re going to try to like tweak some things and make it like I’m able to actually sell it because obviously we have to be careful with the whole alcohol industry.”
It’s not just that advertising for alcohol goes in violation of Marquette’s policies about athletes and name, image, and likeness opportunities. There’s the fact that Beers is only a freshman and thus is still a long way off from even turning 21 herself and being able to legally purchase alcohol. That does limit the depth of what’s possible.

But as it turns out, what’s still possible is LOTS OF CLEVER WORD PLAY.
For example, now available on the NIL Store, which is Marquette’s official partner and provider for merchandise in the Spirit Shop on campus: A HERE FOR BEERS shirt.
I am here at the volleyball match to see Allie Beers, the volleyball player. Even has her autograph on it. BUT ALSO the shirt just HAPPENS to be inferring something else.
I suspect that the NIL Store, as an official partner with Marquette, is trending towards a little bit more conservative on the issue. That sends us over to Allie Beers’ new partnership with Athletes Thread.
There’s one that’s a cartooned-up picture of Beers and her name, sure, okay, that’s nice. That’s for the person in your life who is not here for clever wordplay. It does have the giant 6 and Beers on the back, so you’ve got that going for you, which is nice.

For the person in your life who IS here for clever wordplay, can I interest you in SERVE BEERS?

It’s a volleyball term! Allie Beers is going to serve in the volleyball match! Volleyball has a rotation system, so when it is her turn to serve, the announcer could say “serve, Beers.”
BUT ALSO……
How about BUMP, BEERS & SERVE?

Again: Volleyball terms! Bump is putting the ball back up in the air after an attack comes across the net. BUT ALSO….
How about WE WANT BEERS?

If you’re a spectator at the McGuire Center, and Allie Beers is on the bench, you could chant this, indicating that you wish to see her play. BUT ALSO…..

Finally, there’s BEERS SIX PACK.

This one is not so clever, unless I’m missing the extra volleyball add from Pack.
For the record, these are all available as a crewneck sweatshirt or a hoodie as well, make your own wardrobe choices as you see fit.
Which one’s your favorite? Got any clever ideas of your own that you’d like to see Allie Beers use in the future? In theory, we’re looking at a few more years of her in a Marquette uniform, and a neat 2027 refresh to the lineup is probably a good idea…..
