WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue women’s basketball will welcome back one of its prominent scorers from its 2023 NCAA Tournament team.

Forward Madison Layden announced she is returning to Purdue as a graduate senior after exploring the NCAA transfer portal, which opened Monday.

Layden, a graduate of Northwestern and Kokomo native, made the announcement through her Instagram page.

Layden is among 36 players in Purdue women’s basketball history with over 1,000 career points and one of just five to have 1,000 points and 200 3-pointers. She was a Big Ten Conference honorable mention as a sophomore, made the Big Ten Conference all freshman team and is a career 83.7% free throw shooter.

In her post, Layden explained how she wanted to play one more season with her younger sister, McKenna, a junior-to-be. Layden wrote that she wants to finish her career in West Lafayette and help the Boilermakers return to March Madness.

Layden sat out this season, when Purdue finished 10-19 and 3-15 Big Ten Conference record, failing to qualify for the conference tournament.

Layden was as productive of a player as Purdue had between 2020 and 2024, averaging 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

Her length and speed at 6-foot-1 allowed Layden to defend shifty points guards and post scorers alike.
