With the league preparing to vote on a sweeping “3-2-1 lottery” reform that could reshape how teams approach the draft, the National Basketball Association is also taking direct aim at tanking.
As part of the proposed overhaul, the NBA would gain greater authority to adjust lottery odds or even draft positions as a form of discipline.
Commissioner Adam Silver has made it clear that addressing the issue is a priority for the league.
“I do think ultimately this is a decision that needs to be made at the ownership level,” Silver said.
“It has business implications, has basketball implications, has integrity implications for the league.
“So, it’s one that we take very seriously, and we are going to fix it. Full stop.”
The reform package also includes a sunset clause after the 2029 draft, allowing the league to reevaluate or adjust the system based on how effective it proves to be.
