Alex Shackell, Julie Mishler Hunting National Records at Indiana State Championships

A pair of individual national high school records will be under assault this weekend when Indiana holds its Girls State Championships at the famed IU Natatorium on Friday and Saturday. As Carmel chases a 39th consecutive team title, Olympian Alex Shackell will contest the 100-yard butterfly, along with seeing action on three relays for the Greyhounds.

In the 100 fly, Shackell will look to break the overall high school record in the event, which is held by Claire Curzan (49.24) from the 2022 season. The public-school record in the event is held by Olympic champion Torri Huske, who clocked a swim of 49.95 during the 2021 high school season. Shackell owns a personal best of 49.49, which was set in December 2023, at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals.

In the 50 freestyle, Wawashee High School’s Julie Mishler has already set a national record this scholastic season, thanks to a 21.61 effort back in December that was good for a public-school record. The overall high school record in the 50 free is 21.59, the time recorded by Gretchen Walsh in 2020.

Indiana annually boasts one of the premier state meets in the nation, both in terms of winning times and depth.
