TYR Summer Championships, Day Two Prelims: Alex Shackell Grabs Top Seed in 100 Butterfly
The first night of the TYR Summer Championships offered some impressive speed, as Australia Jamie Jack paced the way in the men’s 50-meter freestyle, going 21.63, while American Kieran Smith bested the field in the 200 individual medley with a swim of 1:57.26. On the women’s side, Tokyo Olympian Rhyan White was the titlist in the 200 backstroke and Louisville recruit Julie Mishler went 24.90 to win the 50 freestyle.
Smith will be back in the pool on Wednesday morning for the Day Two prelims at the William Woollett Aquatic Center. Smith is slated to race the 400 freestyle, an event in which he is an Olympic bronze medalist. That 400 freestyle will also include Paris Olympian Aaron Shackell, making for an enticing final during the night session. In the 100 butterfly, Alex Shackell will headline her field.
Here’s an event-by-event recap of the Day Two prelims:
Women’s 400 Freestyle
Bound for the University of Virginia, Madi Mintenko nailed down the top seed for the final of the 400 freestyle with a morning swim of 4:09.34. That effort was more than two seconds faster than Justina Kozan, who was the winner of the 200 individual medley on Night One. At night, Mintenko will chase her personal best, which sits at 4:07.53.
A quartet of swimmers moved into the final behind 4:12 performances, including Australia’s Molly Walker (4:12.04) and Chloe Stepanek (4:12.53). Bella Sims (4:12.61) and Gena Jorgenson (4:12.89) followed in fifth and sixth. Sims just returned from the World Championships in Singapore, where she raced a leg on the United States’ 800 freestyle relay during prelims.

Men’s 400 Freestyle
United States Olympians Aaron Shackell and Kieran Smith will duel in the final of the 400 freestyle after finishing second and third in the event during prelims. Aussie Matthew Galea secured the top seed for evening when he posted a time of 3:50.58. Shackell was right behind Galea in 3:50.65 while Smith went 3:51.26 en route to winning the second of three heats.
Shackell and Smith are targeting a swim faster than 3:45.71 in the final. That time is what teenage star Luka Mijatovic posted at Nationals and is currently good for a berth to the Pan Pacific Championships next summer. However, if Shackell or Smith can get under that time, they would bump ahead of Mijatovic for the Pan Pacs bid.

Women’s 100 Butterfly
Olympian and Team USA veteran Alex Shackell had no trouble claiming the top seed for the final of the 100 butterfly, as she registered a time of 57.69. Shackell’s time was more than a second faster than the 58.75 of Australian Bella Grant, who will be the second seed. Shackell missed out on a spot on the U.S. squad that just competed at the World Championships, but she’s looking to end the summer on a positive note.
Bailey Hartman was the third-fastest swimmer in prelims, going 59.31.
