The legacies of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are already intertwined early in their WNBA careers. The league is leaning into the rivalry between these two young stars, which began during their college days at Iowa and LSU.
Commonly, the discourse around the two All-Rookie and All-Star players from last year is volatile. However, they have already helped the WNBA make irreversibly positive strides and carved out pieces of history in their first professional seasons.

Clark led the league in assists with 8.4 per contest, and earned First-Team All-WNBA honors as a rookie. Reese also broke a league record last year when she contributed an impressive 13.1 rebounds per game.

The Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever are led by these great players, and the two up-and-coming franchises are set to face off five times this season. The first of which came on Saturday during the opening weekend of the 2025 WNBA season.
During the contest, Clark was called for a flagrant foul after she knocked Reese to the floor. While tempers flared and Reese took exception to the play, her veteran teammate Ariel Atkins made a recent comment to smooth the waters.

“Realistically, hard fouls happen,” Atkins wrote. “But the hate is unnecessary and the narrative y’all have built is weird to me and dangerous. Just let them hoop.”
Both players performed exceptionally well on the biggest stage, but unfortunately, most fans just want to talk about the altercation.
Clark recorded a 20-point, 10-assist, 10-rebound triple-double to open the season and also added four blocks and two steals. Reese had an impressive box score of her own, contributing 12 points and 17 rebounds, knocking down a three-pointer as well.
Fortunately for fans of each franchise and the WNBA in general, these two teams will face off four more times this season. While these were always going to be spirited battles, the scuffle from this game will heighten the tensions heading into their next matchup on June 7.
