Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz out for season with torn UCL, to undergo Tommy John surgery

Jack Kochanowicz’s season is over.

The Los Angeles Angels starter has a torn UCL in his right elbow and will now undergo Tommy John surgery, he revealed on Tuesday. That came just days after he was placed on the 15-day injured list due to elbow inflammation.

Kochanowicz allowed seven runs and six hits in his last start, though he lasted just one-third of an inning in what ended up being a 9-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed six straight hits to open up the bottom of the first inning in that contest.

After that game, Kochanowicz said his elbow had been bothering him for his last three starts, but he was trying to pitch through it. The issue, he said, didn’t seem like it was that bad.

“Honestly, I didn’t think this was in the cards,” he said on Tuesday, via The Sporting Tribune’s Jack Haslett. “I really thought it was just maybe just a little angry … I thought I was going to hear back that it was all right.”

Kochanowicz will finish the season with a 2-5 record in 13 appearances with a 6.19 ERA. The 25-year-old had a career-worst 6.81 ERA and a 3-11 record last season with the Angels. It’s unclear how long Kochanowicz will now be sidelined with the injury, though the rest of the 2026 campaign is now certainly off the table.

The Angels will enter Tuesday’s contest with the Houston Astros with a 25-42 record, which has them in last in the AL West race. They’ve lost seven of their last 10 games, too.
