NCAA Men’s Championships: Arizona State Edges Florida in 200 Medley Relay

Florida’s quest for team placement at last year’s NCAA Championships was dealt a blow on Night 1 with a disqualification in the 200 medley relay.

Wednesday’s spoiler was more benign, though still disappointing.

Led by Ilya Kharun’s split of 18.70 on butterfly, the Sun Devils upended the newly-minted NCAA record holders, going 1:20.07 to take the title on the opening night at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatics Center.

The time takes down the meet record that Florida set in 2024, though the NCAA mark from SECs of 1:20.03 stands. The 1:20 barrier remains resilient, though for how long remains to be seen.

Both times are quicker than the 1:20.28 that Texas used to win last year.

Arizona State set the pace with the team of Adam Chaney, Andy Dobrzanski, Kharun and Jonny Kulow. Pending confirmation of Kharun’s nationality shift from Canada back to the United States, that record would be eligible for the American record, set at 1:20.92 by Indiana last year.NCAA

Florida was second with Jonny Marshall, Koen de Groot, Scotty Buff and Josh Liendo. De Groot is the new face on the team, replacing last year’s 100 breaststroke champion Julian Smith. Liendo and Buff switched legs on the back-end this year.

Texas was third in 1:20.46. Indiana secured fourth in 1:21.12. NC State set a fast pace from the morning slowest heat, with the team of Quintin McCarty, Daniel Diehl, Aiden Hayes and Drew Salls going 1:21.23 to knock 1.5 seconds off their seed time. That was bang on the seed time that LSU used for fourth place, and it ended up fifth at night. California was sixth, with Michigan seventh and Kentucky eighth.

Tennessee was ninth overall at 1:22.05 from the morning, led by a 19.35 split in butterfly from Gui Caribe.

Will Modglin’s 20.19 was the fastest backstroke split for Texas. At 22.35, Yamato Okadome was the fastest breaststroker, with Texas’ Nate Germonprez second at 22.39. Kharun’s 18.70 was faster than, for instance, the freestyle anchor by California’s Martin Wrede.

Among the freestyles, Liendo led the way in 17.58. Four swimmers cracked 18 seconds, with the other three 17.9s for Kentucky’s Falemana Tuufui, LSU’s Jere Hirbar and Kulow.
