Auburn football commit Jase Mathews flips, signs with Ole Miss

by

AUBURN — Alex Golesh‘s first early signing period with Auburn football didn’t end with a much-needed signing, as longtime commit and five-star wide receiver Jase Mathews flipped and signed with Ole Miss on Friday, Dec. 5.

Mathews had been committed to Auburn since August, but he pushed his decision date from Wednesday to Friday earlier this week. Auburn’s coaching change was one of several factors in pushing that back, as LSU was another program pushing for his signature.

He was the highest-rated commit in what’s shaped into a 17-man signing class for Auburn, which ranks 48th nationally sans Mathews, according to 247Sports.

A torn ACL sidelined Mathews for much of his senior season, but the five-star was still a productive high school player career-wise. Including three games this fall, Mathews totaled 2,178 receiving yards and 20 touchdown receptions in four years on 129 catches, averaging 16.9 yards per receptions.

In three games this year, Mathews totaled 194 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions, but his junior campaign was his best. In 10 games as a junior, Mathews registered 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns on 68 receptions.
