Baltimore Pool Given New Name to Honor Michael Phelps
One of pools that Michael Phelps swam in while growing up in the Baltimore area will now bear the name of the 23-time Olympic gold medalist. The newly-christened “Phelps Legacy Pool” is a facility at the Padonia Park Club in Cockeysville, Md., where Phelps and older sisters Whitney and Hillary swam as children ad still hold pool record.
According to WBAL-TV, the change “is in celebration of the new Phelps legacy fund established by Debbie Phelps and the pool is dedicated in her honor.” Debbie is the matriarch of the Phelps family, and she was a familiar fixture in the stands at major meets throughout her son’s legendary competitive career.
The news report from WBAL noted that Debbie recently announced her retirement after more than 50 years working for Baltimore County Public Schools.
Michael Phelps will turn 40 later this month, and he has not disappeared from the sport in the nine years since his second retirement. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2023 and has joined the NBC Sports broadcast booth on select occasions during major competitions. Phelps and his wife Nicole welcomed their fourth son last year.
