The Boston College football team takes its 5-4 record into Saturday’s road game against Atlantic Coast Conference rival SMU (8-1). BC is 2-3 in the ACC; SMU is 5-0 and is ranked 14th in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings.
The Eagles have made a big switch at quarterback as Thomas Castellanos has left the team after losing his starting job to Grayson James, a 6-3 junior. Castellanos started 12 games last season and held onto the job when new coach Bill O’Brien took over this season. However, Castellanos was benched in last week’s 37-31 win over Syracuse after completing only 2 of his first 7 passes. He finished with 18 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on the season.
James went 5-for-6 for 51 yards and a touchdown pass to Jeremiah Franklin that stood as the game-winning score against Syracuse.
The all-time series is even at a game apiece. SMU won the initial meeting, 31-29, at home in 1986. Boston College defeated SMU in the 2023 Wasabi Fenway Bowl just 11 months ago, led by two fourth-quarter touchdown runs from Castellanos.
The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN.
