Dec. 8—EDINA — The top two Class A boys basketball teams in the state, Cherry and Dawson-Boyd, went toe-to-toe at the Tip-Off Classic in a matinee matchup on Saturday.
The top-ranked Tigers, following a 27-27 tie at halftime, pulled away from No. 2 Dawson-Boyd in the final 18 minutes to secure a 70-64 victory at the Edina Community Center.
Isaiah Asuma led the way for Cherry, who had four scorers in double figures. The 6-foot-2 sophomore guard scored 20 points on 10 of 11 shooting from the field.
Noah Sundquist was key in the Tigers’ supporting cast. The 6-3 senior guard racked up 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had one block.
For the Blackjacks, Division II Southwest Minnesota State University commit Brayson Boike dropped in a game-high 25 points. The 6-8 senior guard shot 9 of 23 from the field and made 4 of 5 free throws. He led Dawson-Boyd with eight rebounds, adding two steals and a pair of assists.
Drew Hjelmeland tacked on 14 points for the Blackjacks, followed by 10 points each from Gunner Liebl and Jaxton Hastad.
Dawson-Boyd returns to its Camden Conference schedule when it hosts Ortonville at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Dawson.
Micah Fuller nearly had a triple-double in host Brandon-Evansville’s win against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Brandon.
The senior wing had 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Chargers, who got 12 points from both Bryce Froemming and Tanner Riedel.
Luke Illies secured a double-double for the Jaguars. The 6-foot-6 senior forward scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds. He shot 6 of 13 from the field and made 2 of 4 free throws.
BBE hosts Benson for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brooten.
The host Rabbits defeated MACCRAY at the Tip-Off Classic in Wabasso.
Xavier Noble led the way with 14 points for the Wolverines. He was supported by Jase Dirksen, Grayson Ahrenholz and Jonah Janssen. Dirksen had 13 points, Ahrenholz scored 12 points and Janssen contributed 11 points.
MACCRAY hosts Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg for a Camden Conference game at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Clara City.
State-ranked Redwood Valley (No. 10, Class AA) cruised past Minnewaska at Redwood Falls.
Tristan O’Neil scored 14 points for the Lakers. Tenzin Dahl had eight points.
Minnewaska hosts New London-Spicer for a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Glenwood.
