Breanna Stewart’s Honest Take on What Really Led to New York Liberty’s 2024 WNBA Title

Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty were able to make an impressive run to a WNBA championship last season. They defeated the Minnesota Lynx in five games to win the WNBA Finals.

When the Liberty went out and brought Stewart in before the 2023 season, it was a clear win-now move. New York wanted a championship and felt that Stewart could be the missing piece.

Throughout the course of the last two years, Stewart has proven them right.

During the 2024 WNBA season, Stewart played in 38 games, averaging 20.4 points per game to go along with 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks. She shot 45.8% from the floor and knocked down 29.5% of her 3-point attempts.

Following the championship run last season, Stewart has spoken out about what led to the Liberty winning it all.

“I hope people definitely appreciate it,” Stewart said. “Us winning a championship was about more than just me coming. But the way that we kind of changed what was happening here in New York and bringing that championship mentality — we didn’t win in year one, but we got there in year two. That’s going to continue in year three and continue in the rest of the years that I’m playing, but also continue in this franchise forever.”
