Brett Baty goes deep, Luisangel Acuña impresses as Mets drop clash with Astros

by

The Mets lost to the Astros, 8-5, on Tuesday afternoon as their spring training slate continued.

Here are the takeaways…

– In his first at-bat, Luisangel Acuña worked the count to 2-2 before stroking a single to left field. He then wreaked havoc on the bases, almost immediately stealing second (and moving to third on an error) before scoring on a single off the bat of Jesse Winker.

His second time up, Acuña saw eight pitches before delivering an RBI ground out.

Acuña finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Brett Baty cracked a solo homer to right field in the third inning after working the count to 3-2. It was a no-doubter off the bat. Baty added a looping single to left field in the fifth inning. He finished 2-for-3 and has a 1.750 OPS this spring.

Jose Siri got the start in center field and smoked a laser of a solo homer down the left field line in the second inning. He also drew a walk.

Jared Young, who is in competition with Acuña, Baty, and others for a spot on the bench, had a pair of hits and drew a walk. On the negative side, Young made a two-run error on a grounder to first base.

Reed Garrett was sharp in his inning of work, retiring the side in order on 14 pitches while striking out one.

– Aside from Garrett, none of the pitchers the Mets used on Tuesday are viewed as candidates to make the Opening Day roster.

Jett Williams ripped a single through the hole between third base and shortstop in the sixth inning his first time up.
