LSU football head coach Brian Kelly is preparing for his fourth year at LSU. A few players have been with Kelly his entire time in Baton Rouge — that includes fifth-year quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

After a promising 2024, Nussmeier elected to return for the 2025 season. There are high expectations for the talented QB this fall. Nussmeier is among the Heisman trophy favorites and has a chance to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

As LSU winds down another spring practice, Kelly met with the media and reflected on the first conversation he remembers having with Nussmeier.

Several LSU players hit the portal amid the coaching transition in 2021, but Kelly said Nussmeier was quick to reaffirm his status at LSU.

“Coach, I’m a Tiger and I’m, I just want to let you know, I’m going to be here,” Nussmeier told Kelly shortly after the new head coach arrived at LSU.

Kelly said it was an uncertain situation, but Nussmeier was “definitive” about wanting to be at LSU. Kelly said that mindset has led to what LSU is seeing with Nussmeier now.

“I think we come full circle, and you see that kind of steadfast commitment to being here at LSU. And I think he’s going to reap the benefits of that,” Kelly said.
