LSU football’s new defensive line coach Kyle Williams hit the field with the Tigers for the first time as Tigers began spring practice.
Williams, a former LSU star and NFL All-Pro, joined Brian Kelly’s staff after Bo Davis departed for the New Orleans Saints. Williams is Kelly’s fourth defensive line coach in four years at LSU.
Kelly met with the media on Wednesday and shared his first impressions of Williams as a coach. Kelly said Williams brings an “impressive resume” to the staff and cited Williams’ 13-years of NFL experience.
“I think the things that stand out immediately for me is his attention to the finer points of playing the position. Somebody that played the position and recently played the position and clearly understands the nuances of the position and can articulate and communicate effectively to those that need to go play it now for LSU,” Kelly said.
Kelly said he spent about 15 minutes watching Williams at Wednesday’s practice and Williams’ connection with the players was obvious.
LSU’s had a revolving door of defensive line coaches. Kelly hopes Williams provides stability.
“I don’t know why it just turned up that way. We’ve turned out great players at the position, so it’s not like position coaches don’t want to coach. I think it’s much more about they’re sought after. Having said that, we certainly have a group that we want to feel as though there’s going to be some continuity at the position,” Kelly said.
Kelly said continuity was something LSU discussed in the search process.
Williams has a talented group to work with in year one. Veteran Jacobian Guillory is returning after missing most of 2024 with an injury. Dominick McKinley and Ahmad Breaux prep for their sophomore campaigns after making significant impacts as true freshman.
