Brian Kelly talks about Garrett Nussmeier’s spring football progress

Spring practice is in full swing at LSU as the 2025 squad hits the practice field in helmets and pads.

LSU football head coach Brian Kelly met with the media on Wednesday and offered updates on several topics, including LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

Kelly said at this point in the year, LSU is looking at Nussmeier building relationships with his receivers.

“Building a relationship with all of his receivers is what we’re looking for in that, timing, and you know he’s got some deep threats. He’s got some guys that certainly provides him with a lot of different options,” Kelly said.

“It’s been really, for me, much more about getting him as much work with the receiver crew and getting on the same page, and that seems to be coming, and I think what we’ll see is a quarterback that comes through the spring and just feels really confident with the options that he has,” Kelly added.

Nussmeier had an up and down 2024, but it was mostly up. According to ESPN’s QBR, Nussmeier ranked No. 13 in college football.

As he returns for his fifth year of college football and second year as LSU’s starter, expectations are sky high for Nussmeier in 2025. The Tigers’ QB is one of the Heisman favorites and has a chance to play himself into the No. 1 overall pick conversation in the 2026 NFL Draft.
