UNCASVILLE, CT — Brittney Griner officially owns the all-time WNBA blocks record.

On June 22, the Connecticut Sun center tied the late Margo Dydek on the league’s all-time blocks list with 877 career blocks. Dydek, who played for 11 seasons in the league, reached the mark in 323 games and has held the record since 2008. Griner reached it in 364 games.

Griner’s record-tying block came with 43 seconds remaining in the first half when she blocked a Kamilla Cardosa layup against Chicago Sky at Mohegan Sun Arena.

“That’s always been the only record I care about,” Griner said in April. Literally the only one my whole career.”

Griner also owns the record for the most blocks in a single WNBA game, with 11 blocks during a Phoenix Mercury and Tulsa Shock matchup in June 2014. During her 13-season career, she’s also led the league in blocks five different times (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018).

On May 30, the 6-foot-9 center became the 18th player in WNBA history to score 6,000 career points. Griner’s milestone came on a four-foot turnaround jumper during a Los Angeles Sparks matchup at PeoplesBank Arena.

Griner, who joined the Sun on a one-year, $1.19 million contract this year, played her first 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury before spending a year with the Atlanta Dream last year. She was selected No. 1 by the Mercury in the 2013 WNBA Draft.

The 35-year-old center plans to play with the Sun this season before the franchise relocates to her hometown of Houston next season. A 10-time All-Star, Griner won a championship with the Mercury in 2014 and also holds two Defensive Player of the Year titles. The Connecticut center has averaged 16.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.4 blocks during her career.
