Brittney Griner feels younger, more at home with Atlanta Dream

Atlanta Dream center Brittney Griner shocked the WNBA when she said she’d test the free agency market for the first time in her career, but her decision seems to have paid off.

The former Phoenix Mercury star addressed reporters at the Dream’s training camp, discussing her first impressions of the team. Griner, who grew up in Houston, Texas, has already felt a connection to Atlanta.

“I love Atlanta. Atlanta reminds me more of home. I feel like I came home,” Griner said. “I’m back in the South, and this is the best thing I could have ever did in my life.”

The 34-year-old played 11 seasons with the Mercury after being drafted first overall by the franchise in 2013.

While it was speculated that Griner would eventually retire with the Mercury, much like Diana Taurasi did this year, Griner entered free agency and unfollowed the Mercury in the process. Through offseason moves and the training camp roster, the Mercury’s new look is younger.

However, Griner seems to be feeling good with the Dream.

“I feel younger here, honestly,” Griner said. “I was starting to feel old, but I feel young and they’re believing in me, that’s all you can ask for. When you get this many years underneath your belt and people are still believing in you and telling you that you can do it, it just feels good.”
