Broncos owe Von Miller a shot to rejoin team

by

Earlier this week, MHR’s Ian St. Clair reported on the ESPN inverview where Broncos legend Von Miller mentioned his efforts to rejoin the Denver Broncos.

Miller was selected by Denver in the 2011 draft, #2 overall in the 1st round. From 2011 until November of 2021, Miller was a dominant defensive force that was instrumental in capturing the Broncos Super Bowl 50 victory in 2015. When he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, his defensive prowess helped them win Super Bowl LVI over the Bengals. From 2022-2024, he played for the Buffalo Bills and had a one-year residency with the Commanders in 2025.

In addition to the two Super Bowl Championships, he was also named Super Bowl MVP for his superb performance against Cam Newton’s Carolina Panthers (Cam Newton never recovered). Von Miller was also NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2011, a 3-time First-team All Pro (2012, 2016 & 2016), a 4-time Second-team All Pro (2011, 2014, 2017 & 2018), an 8-time Pro Bowl Selection (2-11, 2012 & 2014-2019), and a 2010’s All-Decade Team selection. He currently is tied with Dallas Cowboy Charles Haley for most career sacks in Super Bowls (4.5).

At age 37, the Broncos, at the very least, owe Von a training camp invite.

Many Broncos fans will recall Jerry Rice’s brief 103-day tenure with the Broncos in 2005 before retiring just days before the start of the regular season. If Denver could give ol’ #19 a shot at at making the club at 42-years old, when it was unlikely there was much left in the tank, the Broncos can give Von a shot at 37.

Sure, the linebacking corps is well-stocked with Bonito, Cooper, and Elliss and it’s unlikely that Von would steal any snaps from those three. However, the arc of the season is long and bends toward injury. There will almost certainly be scenarios where Von’s tenacity and athleticism could be situationally utilized. While he has a history of being a vocal leader, it’s unlikely that he would usurp the current structure and has all the potential to be a valued veteran voice.

The Broncos are poised for a Super Bowl run in 2026 and they need all the help they can get to get there. So, why not give Von a shot in training camp to evaluate how he would fit into these new-look Broncos? Like with Jerry Rice, it may not work out, and a parting of ways may be necessary. For everything that Von has done with the Broncos and the loyalty he has shown the franchise since his departure, it makes absolute sense to let him try to earn a spot in training camp.

It’s unwise to underestimate Von Miller. He may just rear up and surprise you. Just ask Cam Newton.

Maybe it’s time for just one more run for Von Miller and the Denver Broncos.
