Caeleb Dressel Slated to Compete at TYR Summer Champs; Several Big Names Entered (PSYCH SHEETS)
Although the World Championships are about to conclude in Singapore, some big names in the sport are scheduled to race from August 5-8 at the TYR Summer Championships. Headling the psych sheets is Caeleb Dressel, with the 10-time Olympic gold medalist entered in the 50-meter freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly.
Dressel opted to not compete at the United States National Championships in June, but he recently competed in a low-key meet in Florida and is now set to test himself in Southern California. The TYR Summer Championships will be Dressel’s biggest meet since last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, where Dressel anchored Team USA to the gold medal in the 400 freestyle relay.
On the men’s side, another prominent name entered in the meet is Hunter Armstrong, a three-time Olympic medalist. With the United States struggling in the backstroke events at the World Championships, Armstrong is entered in the 50 back and 100 back, and could provide a calming sense in those disciplines.
Meanwhile, Kieran Smith is entered in multiple events, including the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle. Smith was the sixth-place finisher at Nationals in the 200 freestyle, but was left off the World Champs team when the U.S. reached the 26-swimmer cap for Singapore. Brooks Curry is slated to compete in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle after posting strong times at Nationals.
Claire Weinstein and Bella Sims, both at the World Champs, appear on the psych sheets. Weinstein was the bronze medalist in the 200 freestyle in Singapore, but was forced to withdraw from the 400 freestyle after battling the stomach illness that has plagued the United States at Worlds.
Paris Olympian Alex Shackell is entered in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly and Rhyan White will see action in all three backstroke events.
