As he sits behind bars in a California prison, Cain Velasquez has the full endorsement of UFC color commentator Joe Rogan.
Like many supporters, Rogan understands and emphasizes with Velasquez’s decision to shoot at Harry Goularte, a man accused of molesting Velasquez’s four-year-old son at a daycare in 2022.
“He did what every father would’ve done,” Rogan recently said on “The Joe Rogan Experience” when discussing the topic with former UFC champion Ilia Topuria. “If you’re not a father. You do not understand the murderous rage you’d have if some man molested your baby. You don’t understand. You would see red in a way that no one could describe to you unless you’re a parent – that f*cking anger.
“If there is ever a plea for temporary insanity, that’s the plea. If there’s ever a person who could justifiably say, ‘I was temporarily insane,’ it’s a father chasing after someone, especially a man, who molests your boy. Everybody understands it. Everybody understands it. He should’ve never gone to jail. He’s not a threat to society. He’s not a danger. He shouldn’t be in prison, and he already did three years. He was already in jail for three years.”
Goularte has not been found guilty at this time and is currently out on bail. He is out on bail awaiting trial on a felony “lewd acts with a minor” charge, to which he has pleaded not guilty. His family has denied any wrongdoing. His next court date is June 2.
Meanwhile, Velasquez was sentenced in March to five years in prison with time served for attempted murder and other charges. He’s eligible for parole in March 2026. Velasquez pursued Goularte in a high-speed chase, shooting a handgun. He struck Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, in the arm, resulting in a non-life-threatening injury.
“He was shooting at this guy,” Rogan said. “Obviously, when you are driving and shooting, you could miss him and kill a bystander. It’s very dangerous. But also, the guy was in a murderous rage for a good reason – for a good reason. If he killed that guy, the world would be better off. A guy like that who walks around and molests children should be dead. That’s just my feeling.”
The story of Velasquez and Goularte has transcended the sports bubble, sparking an international discussion about the line between legality and morality. Despite the seriousness of the charges, Velasquez has become a sympathetic figure to many – including Judge Arthur Bocanegra, who became emotional as he sentenced Velasquez to prison. Rogan thinks the answer is very easy.
“Kill them all. That’s how I feel. Kill them all,” Rogan said. “Anybody wants to do that to children, there’s no reason for them to exist. Yeah, you’re just going to ruin lives – and not just their lives. You’re going to ruin all the people’s lives that they ruin because they’re all f*cked up now. You kill so much potential from a human being to do that to a baby. It’s insane. It’s f*cking insane. That’s unfortunately the story with Cain right now. He was out for a while. Once they let him out, he was coaching at AKA. He’s an amazing coach. … I hope Trump pardons him and Dana makes something with that. Maybe that’s possible. Maybe that’s the best option.”
