Can Nebraska take a year three leap under head coach Matt Rhule

by

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule talked about a year three leap for the Nebraska football program, in a recent interview with Urban Meyer on the Triple Option Podcast. He specifically explained how this jump could happen.

If anything, this speaks to the coach’s track record. Rhule went 10-4 in 2015 with Temple after going 2-10 and 6-6 in his previous years. He went 11-3 with Baylor in 2019 after going 1-11 and 7-6 in the previous two seasons.

Now, he will try to work his magic with the Huskers. Nebraska went 5-7 in his first year, and 7-6 in his second year. The program will have second-year quarterback Dylan Raiola under center, as well as a bunch of additions via the transfer portal on both sides of the football.

The coach broke down what it takes to make that leap, as transcribed by Husker247’s Brian Christopherson.

“To me it’s always been about we’ve taken young players, we’ve taken our lumps early with the young guys. And as that quarterback – it was PJ Walker at Temple, it was Charlie Brewer at Baylor. When they got to Year 3 it was their team. We had a good defense and guys kind of knew what to expect.”

“It’s hard. So in Year 2 a lot of times guys are like, ‘Man, why are we doing this? We’re not undefeated.’ You got to kind of get to Year 3. You got to get to the point where they’re like, ‘Listen, it’s not changing. We know how to work hard. We’ve had a bunch of close losses. Now it’s time to go win.’ I think we have the guys to go do it. Certainly we have a quarterback. When you have a quarterback you have a chance.”

The third-year leap for the program would do wonders, as fans are eager for this group to take the next step. A favorable schedule and an experienced group should help work in the Huskers’ favor.
