Carmel Boys Claim 11th Consecutive State Title

The Carmel High School boys claimed their 11th consecutive Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) state championship on Saturday.

Carmel scored 412.5 points to dominate the meet at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Fishers finished second with 216, followed by Bloomington South (184), Center Grove (170), Penn (156.5), Homestead (150), Valparaiso (125.5), Franklin (102), Carroll (82), Zionsville (81) and Hamilton Southeastern (81) rounding out the top 10.

Carmel started strong with a win in the 200 medley relay as Anderson Kopp, Yi Zheng, Andrew Shackell and Michael Gorey got to the wall in 1:29.39 ahead of Valparaiso (1:31.32).

Shackell, Carter Hadley, Gorey and Yi Zheng won the 200 free relay in 1:21.64. Shackell led off with a 20.24.

Going three relays and just one individual event, Shackell teamed with William Allen, Hadley and Kopp to win the 400 free relay (2:59.53). Shackell led off with a 44.48.

Shackell won the 100 butterfly in 47.42 in his one individual event.

Allen won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.07, holding off Fishers’ Jonathan Hines (1:37.55). Allen also won the 500 free in 4:20.88, going 1-2 with Kopp (4:21.19) as Hines was third (4:22.54).

Bloomington South’s David Kovacs won the 200 IM in 1:46.64 ahead of Carmel’s Yi Zheng (1:47.64). Kovacs also won the 100 backstroke in 47.63.

Bloomington North’s James Sewart won the 50 free in 20.08, holding off Jake Tarara by a hundredth of a second. Tarara won the 100 free in 43.93.

Valparaiso’s Jonah Lee won the 100 breaststroke in 54.13, holding off Franklin’s Lucas Ackerman (54.71).

Oak Hill’s Grant Cates broke the diving state record for scoring with 655.95 points.
