Texas is favored in its rematch with the Georgia Bulldogs, but the 2.5 point line suggests the game should be close. Both the Longhorns and Bulldogs have had shaky roads to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The difference is Georgia lost again. Texas didn’t.
UT hopes to avenge the Oct. 19, 30-15 loss to Georgia and punch its ticket directly to the college football playoff. A win in the SEC title game would give Texas a first round bye and at least a top four seed.
But what happens if the Longhorns lose in Atlanta? By beating the Aggies, Texas basically assured itself of a place in the 12-team playoff. But a loss would mean UT has to play a first round game. Seeds five through eight host that game.
USA TODAY Sports has run through five of the scenarios that could play out during championship Saturday. They detail two scenarios where Texas loses. In each, UT ends up with the No. 6 seed and would host a game.
In ‘Scenario 4’, the sixth seeded Longhorns would face Big 12 champion Arizona State, with the winner advancing to play SMU in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Everything stays the same in ‘Scenario 5’, but the Texas-ASU winner plays Clemson.
Both of those scenarios have both Texas and Oregon losing. If just Texas loses, they are likely to get the No. 5 seed in the bracket.
