CHEBOYGAN – Luke Munger was a force on the football field for the Cheboygan Chiefs.
Recently, the Cheboygan senior star was recognized by the Northern Michigan Football League Legends Division in a major way.
Thanks to an excellent final season, Munger was named the league’s defensive player of the year. In addition, he made the NMFL defensive first team as a productive end, while also making the first team offense as a lineman. Defensively, Munger recorded 40 tackles, four sacks and nine tackles for loss.

“Since starting my coaching career in 1990, he is the second-best offensive linemen I have coached – second only to Tim Lelito, who went on to play five years in the NFL,” Nesbitt said of Munger. “He is athletic, violent, and has a motor.”
Munger will continue his football career at Northwood University next year.
Five other Cheboygan players earned NMFL Legends honorable mention accolades, including seniors Sean Postula (running back), Quincy Schneider (offensive line), Chauncey Lovelly (defensive line), Evan Benson (defensive back) and Gabe Sabolsky (special teams).
Rounding out the Chiefs was senior Mantas Jett, who was recognized with a special mention honor.
