Coca-Cola 600 winner Daniel Suarez gives post-race emotional tribute to Kyle Busch

Daniel Suarez fought back tears after winning the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, dedicating his emotional victory to Kyle Busch and his family following a difficult week for the NASCAR community.

Suarez became the first Mexican-born driver to win NASCAR’s longest race after rain brought the event to an early end at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Trackhouse Racing driver used late strategy and strong restarts to hold off Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin before the race was called.

But beyond the significance of the win itself, Suarez spoke afterwards about his desire to honour Busch, who had played a major role in his early career.

During his rise through the NASCAR ranks, Daniel Suarez spent time driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports, and he has spoken before about how Busch supported him during some of the tougher stretches before he broke through as a Cup Series driver.

Speaking after climbing from the car, Suarez became emotional while reflecting on Busch’s influence on his career and personal journey in American motorsport.

“Kyle, he was special,” Suarez said.

“I was doing this for Kyle, for Samantha, for Brexton and Lennix and for all of his family.”

The tribute quickly became one of the defining moments of the weekend, especially given the emotional atmosphere that had settled over the sport.

Suarez also explained earlier in the evening how Busch would often reach out during tougher periods in his development as a driver, encouraging him to keep pushing forward.

That history added another layer to what was already one of the biggest victories of Suarez’s NASCAR career.

Late strategy call helped Suarez secure historic victory

For much of the race, Suarez did not appear to be a major contender for victory, with several frontrunners controlling the pace at Charlotte.

However, Trackhouse Racing made a crucial decision to take two tyres during a late caution, giving Suarez the track position he needed ahead of the final restarts.

He then managed to stay ahead of both Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin as rain moved toward the circuit shortly before midnight.

The weather eventually forced NASCAR officials to call the race early, officially handing Suarez his third Cup Series victory and his first since 2024.

The win also secured Suarez a unique place in NASCAR history as the first Mexican-born driver to capture victory in the Coca-Cola 600.

Even with the historic achievement, Suarez’s emotional tribute afterwards showed the result carried far more personal meaning than statistics or milestones alone.
