College Football Playoff bracket release live updates: Who will make the 12-team field?

by

The College Football Playoff committee has some tough decisions for Sunday’s final rankings.

The top four are pretty set in some order — Indiana, Georgia, Texas Tech and Ohio State — and we shouldn’t see drama at Nos. 5 through 8 with Oregon, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. It’s also pretty clear that American Conference champion Tulane and Sun Belt champion James Madison will be the final two conference champions in the field after Duke’s overtime win over No. 17 Virginia.

The committee’s main debate will likely center around Alabama, Notre Dame and Miami. The No. 9 Tide were handled by Georgia in the SEC title game to fall to 10-3. Notre Dame and Miami are both 10-2 — the Hurricanes beat the Irish in Week 2 — and neither played on conference championship weekend.

How far will Alabama fall? Out of the playoff entirely? If Alabama makes the playoff field, it will be the first three-loss team to qualify for the playoff as an at-large. There are only two spots for those three teams, so someone is going to be left out.
